Art Description Generator: Describe Paintings and Prints That Sell

An art description generator turns your notes about a painting, print or drawing into a product description a buyer can read before they decide to hang it on their wall. It works well when your notes carry what a photo cannot show: the medium, the surface, the exact size, whether it is an original or a reproduction, and how it will arrive. It works badly when you type “beautiful abstract painting” and hope, because then it fills the gap with mood words, or guesses at a canvas size you never gave it. This guide covers what to feed one, how to check the draft, a template for writing art descriptions by hand, and when your own words are the better choice.

The rule that matters most for art: a generator must never claim a medium, a size, an edition number or “original” status you did not state. A buyer who pays original prices for what turns out to be a giclée print has every right to a refund and a bad review.

What makes an art description different

Most product descriptions answer “what is it and will it fit”. An art listing answers those plus a third question nothing else on Etsy has to carry: “what exactly am I buying?” The same image can be an original oil on canvas, a signed limited edition print, an open edition poster or a digital download. Each one is a different product at a very different price, and the photo looks almost the same for all four.

The questions an art buyer brings, roughly in the order they ask them:

  1. Is this the original, or a print? If a print, what kind, and is it numbered?
  2. How big is it, with and without the frame or border?
  3. What is it painted or printed on, and with what?
  4. Does it arrive framed, stretched, rolled or flat?
  5. Will it suit the room I have in mind?

A good draft answers all five. A generator can only do that if your notes contain the answers.

What to feed an art description generator

Treat your notes as the label on the back of the canvas, typed out. The more of these you include, the less you edit afterwards.

Note Example Why it matters
Type of piece Original painting / giclée print / digital download The most expensive mistake to get wrong
Subject and style Coastal landscape, loose impressionist brushwork Becomes the opening line and the core of the title
Medium Acrylic and oil pastel Buyers search by medium
Surface Gallery-wrapped cotton canvas, 3.8 cm deep Decides whether it needs a frame
Size 40 x 50 cm, unframed The most common pre-sale question
Edition Limited edition of 50, numbered and signed Only if true, and only the real number
Paper or ink for prints 310 gsm cotton rag paper, archival pigment inks Separates a fine art print from a poster
Finish and hanging Varnished, wired, ready to hang Saves a buyer a trip to the framer
Shipping format Ships rolled in a tube / flat between boards Answers “will it arrive creased?”
Colours Teal, sand, soft white Helps the buyer picture the room

You do not need full sentences. “original acrylic painting, coastal landscape, loose brushwork, teal sand white, 40x50cm gallery wrapped canvas 3.8cm deep, varnished, wired ready to hang, signed on front, ships boxed” is enough for a decent generator to work from.

Anything about edition size, medium or originality that you did not type should not appear in the draft. If it does, delete it, because the tool made it up.

How to use an art description generator, step by step

Here is the whole job with ListingBrief AI’s free tool as the example. Most generators follow roughly the same shape.

  1. Measure the piece. Height by width, in the units your buyers use, plus depth for a stretched canvas. For a print, give the paper size and the image size if there is a border.
  2. Write down the type. Original, limited edition print, open edition print or digital file. If it is a print, note the paper and the printing method your printer uses, copied from their spec sheet.
  3. Open the generator and paste your notes. On the free Shopify description generator you can do this without an account; it returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
  4. Pick a tone. Originals and limited editions often suit a premium voice that leans on materials and process. Cheerful nursery prints suit a playful one. ListingBrief AI offers simple, premium, handmade and playful tones next to the default.
  5. Check the draft line by line against your notes, using the checklist below.
  6. Paste it into the listing, then add your own short story about the piece if you have one. That part should be yours.

For an Etsy listing, the same notes on the ListingBrief AI dashboard give you a title, all 13 tags and the description in one go. That saves retyping the medium and size three times when you list a series of prints from the same collection.

ListingBrief AI is built not to state a material or a measurement your notes do not support, and it says on the validation panel what it removed. That is a useful default. It is not a reason to skip the check below, because it is your shop name on the listing.

How to check a generated art description

Run every draft through these checks before it goes live.

If you find yourself fixing more than two lines, your notes were too thin. Add the missing facts and generate again. That is faster than rewriting.

An art description template you can fill by hand

If you would rather write it yourself, or you want to know what a good draft looks like, this structure works for most paintings, drawings and prints on Etsy and Shopify:

[Original painting / art print] of [subject], [one line on the feeling or the place].

[Two sentences on the style, the colours and the kind of room it suits.]

Medium and surface: [Medium] on [surface]. [Varnish or finish.]

Size: [Height x width, depth], [framed or unframed].

Edition: [Original, one of one / limited edition of N, signed and numbered / open edition.]

Arrives: [Ready to hang, rolled in a tube, flat-packed, framing not included.]

Filled in, it reads like this:

Original acrylic painting of a quiet beach at low tide, all teal water and pale sand.

Loose, layered brushwork that reads as calm from across the room and rewards a closer look. It suits a bedroom, a hallway or anywhere you want a little sea air.

Medium and surface: Acrylic and oil pastel on gallery-wrapped cotton canvas. Finished with a satin varnish.

Size: 40 x 50 cm, 3.8 cm deep, unframed. The painting continues around the edges, so it needs no frame.

Edition: Original, one of one. Signed on the front.

Arrives: Wired and ready to hang, wrapped and boxed.

Originals, prints and digital downloads: what each needs most

The template covers every kind of piece, but each one has a line buyers look for first.

Piece The line buyers look for Common mistake in drafts
Original painting “Original, one of one” and the surface Calling a print “original artwork”
Limited edition print Edition size and whether it is signed An edition number nobody gave it
Open edition print Paper, ink and print size Implying scarcity that does not exist
Digital download File type, sizes included, “no physical item” Burying the fact it is digital
Drawing or sketch Paper, medium and whether it is fixed Vague “mixed media” for a plain pencil drawing
Commissioned portrait What you need from the buyer and how long it takes Promising any style at any size

If you sell digital art, the digital downloads listing guide covers the file and delivery settings Etsy asks for.

Generator or by hand: which suits your shop

Situation Better choice Reason
A series of 30 prints from one collection Generator Keeps each description distinct without rewriting the structure
One large original you spent a month on By hand Its story is part of what the buyer pays for
The same print in five sizes Generator for the copy, a size table by hand One description, one clear table
Wall art for a print-on-demand shop Generator Many listings, same facts per product line
A commission listing By hand Your process and turnaround are personal

When the manual way is enough

A generator is a shortcut for volume. You may not need it if:

In those cases, use the template and the checklist, and skip the tool. A good compromise is to let a generator draft the factual sections (medium, size, edition, shipping) and write the opening lines yourself.

Getting the rest of the listing right

A strong description does little if nobody finds the listing. On Etsy the title and tags carry the search work: see how to write an Etsy title, how to use all 13 Etsy tags and the full tag sets for six kinds of product. If you also sell handmade goods beside your art, the jewelry description generator guide and the candle description generator guide cover what those categories need.

When you are ready to try it, paste one piece’s notes into the free description generator and compare the draft against the checklist above. If it passes, the rest of the collection will go the same way.
