Bag Description Examples: How to Describe a Bag, With Six to Copy

A good bag description answers the questions a buyer would otherwise ask you in a message: how big it really is, what fits inside, how it closes, how it is carried and what it is made of. Photos show the shape and the colour. Numbers and plain facts show everything else. This guide walks through what to include, gives six bag description examples you can adapt (tote, crossbody, clutch, crochet bag, backpack and leather handbag), and ends with a fill-in template.

The fact most bag listings get wrong is size. A bag photographed alone on a white background has no scale at all. A bag on a model has the model’s scale. The buyer still cannot tell whether their laptop, water bottle or phone will fit. Give the dimensions in numbers, then say what fits inside. That second line does more selling than any adjective.

What a bag description needs

Here is the checklist. Use it as a review pass on any existing listing.

Fact Why buyers need it Weak version Strong version
Dimensions Photos have no scale “Roomy” “14 x 12 x 4 inches (36 x 30 x 10 cm)”
What fits Turns numbers into a picture Not mentioned “Fits a 13 inch laptop, a water bottle and a jumper”
Strap or handle Decides how it is carried “Long strap” “Adjustable strap, 22 to 50 inches; 9 inch handle drop”
Closure Security matters on a commute Not mentioned “Zip top, plus a magnetic snap on the front pocket”
Pockets Organisers buy for this “Lots of pockets” “One zip inner pocket, two slip pockets”
Material Sets price, care and expectations “Quality fabric” “Heavy 12 oz cotton canvas, cotton lining”
Care Stops complaints before they start Not mentioned “Spot clean only; do not machine wash”

Name materials you can stand behind. “Genuine leather”, “full-grain”, “vegan leather”, “waterproof” and “organic cotton” are claims a buyer can hold you to. If you are not sure the fabric is waterproof, write “water-resistant coating” only if the supplier says so, or say nothing.

How to measure a bag for a listing

Measure flat and empty, in the same order every time, and give both inches and centimetres if you ship abroad.

  1. Width: across the bottom, seam to seam. If the bag tapers, give the top width too.
  2. Height: from the base to the top edge, not including handles.
  3. Depth: across the base gusset, side to side.
  4. Handle drop: from the top of the handle to the top edge of the bag. This tells a buyer whether it goes over the shoulder or only in the hand.
  5. Strap length: the full strap, at its shortest and longest setting if it adjusts.

Write it in one line in that order (width x height x depth) so buyers comparing several listings can read it at a glance. Then add the “what fits” line from a real test: put the items in and check.

How to describe a bag, step by step

  1. Open with the type, the material and what makes it yours. “A heavy canvas tote with a leather base and an inside zip pocket” says more than “the perfect everyday bag”.
  2. Say how it is carried and where it goes. Shoulder, hand, crossbody, back; work, market, travel, evenings out.
  3. Give the dimensions and what fits. Numbers first, then the real items.
  4. List the closure and the pockets. Short and specific.
  5. Add one care line for the material.
  6. Close with the practical details: made to order or ready to ship, personalisation, gift wrap.

Six bag description examples

Each example is written for a real kind of listing. Replace every number with your own; never keep a measurement that does not match your bag.

1. Canvas tote bag

A heavy 12 oz cotton canvas tote with a sturdy flat base, hand-printed with a botanical design in water-based ink.

Size: 15 x 14 x 4 inches (38 x 36 x 10 cm). Handle drop 11 inches, so it sits comfortably on the shoulder over a coat.

Fits a 13 inch laptop, a water bottle and a day’s shopping. One inside slip pocket for keys and phone.

Spot clean, or hand wash cold and dry flat to keep the print sharp.

Why it works: the handle drop is a number tied to how it is worn, and “over a coat” answers the shoulder question for winter buyers.

2. Crossbody bag

A small crossbody bag in vegan leather with a zip top and an adjustable webbing strap.

Size: 9 x 6 x 2.5 inches (23 x 15 x 6 cm). Strap adjusts from 24 to 52 inches, so it can be worn across the body or on one shoulder.

Holds a large phone, a card wallet, keys and a lip balm. One zip pocket on the back panel.

Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Why it works: crossbody buyers care about two things, strap range and whether their phone fits. Both are answered in numbers.

3. Clutch bag

An evening clutch in velvet with a gold-tone frame clasp and a detachable 47 inch chain strap.

Size: 10 x 5.5 x 2 inches (25 x 14 x 5 cm). Fits a phone up to 6.7 inches, a compact and a few cards.

Satin lining with a slip pocket. Store in the dust bag provided to keep the pile from flattening.

Ships in a gift box, ready to give.

Why it works: a clutch is often bought for one event. The phone size and the gift box answer the two last-minute questions before the buyer has to ask.

4. Crochet bag

A handmade crochet market bag in recycled cotton yarn, worked in a stretchy mesh stitch that grows to hold more than it looks.

Size: 12 x 14 inches (30 x 36 cm) empty; the mesh stretches to carry a full load of groceries. Handle drop 10 inches.

Each bag is made to order, so allow about a week before dispatch. Colours may vary slightly between dye lots.

Hand wash cold and dry flat.

Why it works: it explains the stretch so the empty size does not put buyers off, and it states the dye-lot variation and make time up front. For more on writing up handmade yarn work, see our crochet description guide.

5. Backpack

A waxed canvas backpack with a roll-top closure, padded straps and a padded laptop sleeve.

Size: 12 x 17 x 5 inches (30 x 43 x 13 cm). The sleeve fits a laptop up to 15 inches; the main compartment holds a change of clothes as well.

Waxed canvas sheds light rain. Re-wax once a season if you use it daily.

Two side pockets for a bottle and an umbrella.

Why it works: “sheds light rain” is honest about what waxed canvas does, and the laptop size is the single fact most backpack buyers filter on.

6. Leather handbag

A structured handbag in full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, hand-stitched with waxed linen thread.

Size: 11 x 8 x 4 inches (28 x 20 x 10 cm). Top handle drop 4 inches; detachable shoulder strap 40 inches.

Magnetic flap closure, one inner zip pocket and one slip pocket.

Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and softens with use. Condition it twice a year with a leather balm.

Why it works: it names the leather grade and tanning plainly, then tells the buyer how the leather will change. Buyers of good leather want that patina; buyers who do not are warned before they order.

A bag description template

When none of the six fits, this structure covers almost any bag:

  1. Line one: “A [type] in [material], with [standout detail].”
  2. Carry line: how it is worn and where it is for.
  3. Size line: “Size: [w] x [h] x [d] inches ([cm]). Handle drop [x]; strap [y] to [z].”
  4. Fits line: the real items you tested inside it.
  5. Closure and pockets: one short line.
  6. Care line: one instruction for the material.
  7. Order line: made to order or ready to ship, personalisation, gift wrap.

Mistakes that cost bag sales

Writing bag descriptions faster

If you list a handful of bags, the template is all you need. If you sell many colourways, sizes and fabrics, rewriting a description for each one is where the hours go.

ListingBrief AI starts from the notes you already have. Type something like “canvas tote, 12 oz cotton, 15 x 14 x 4 in, 11 in handle drop, inside slip pocket, botanical print, spot clean” and it writes an Etsy title within the 140-character limit, all 13 tags and a description, with Shopify fields as well if you sell there. You can pick a tone (default, simple, premium, handmade or playful), so a market tote can read differently from an evening clutch. New accounts get 5 free generations a day, no credit card.

Read every draft against the bag before you publish it. A generator only knows what your notes tell it, so put the measurements, materials and closure into the notes, then check each one came through exactly as you wrote it. For the title and tags, see Etsy title examples and Etsy tags examples.

When the manual way is enough

You can skip a tool entirely if:

Measure every bag the same way, add the “what fits” line, and keep the material honest. That covers most of what makes a bag description work.
