Best Size for Etsy Listing Photos: Pixels, Shape and File Rules
October 19, 2026
The best size for Etsy listing photos is at least 2000 pixels on both the width and the height. That is Etsy’s own recommendation, and it is the number to shoot and export at. Separately, your first listing photo has a hard floor: Etsy says it should be at least 635 pixels wide and tall “to avoid showing up lower in searches”. Shoot landscape or square, leave space around the product so Etsy’s thumbnail crops do not cut it off, save as JPG or PNG in sRGB, and keep each file around 1MB so uploads finish. The rest of this guide explains each of those numbers, where they come from, and how to apply them to a whole shop in one pass.
The one rule to remember: 2000 pixels on the shortest side, landscape or square, with room to crop.
The best size for Etsy listing photos, in one table
Every figure below is quoted from Etsy’s help centre page Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop, as of October 2026.
| Image | Etsy’s figure | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Listing photos | 2000 px or more on width and height | Recommended |
| First listing photo | 635 px or more on width and height | Minimum, or it may rank lower |
| Shop logo | 500 x 500 px | Recommended |
| Profile photo | 400 x 400 px | Recommended |
| Mini shop banner | 1600 x 213 px (1200 x 160 px minimum) | Recommended |
| Big shop banner | 1600 x 400 px (1200 x 300 px minimum) | Recommended |
| Order receipt banner | 760 x 100 px | Minimum |
Etsy states the listing photo rule like this:
We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more. Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches.
Two different numbers do two different jobs. The 2000 pixel figure is about quality: big enough that a shopper can zoom into the stitching, the glaze or the grain of the wood. The 635 pixel figure is about search: a first photo smaller than that is the one case where Etsy says image size can push a listing down.
Why 2000 pixels, when the screen shows far less
A listing photo on a phone fills a few hundred pixels of width. So why send Etsy four times that?
- Zoom. Shoppers pinch and zoom on handmade items to judge quality. A 2000 pixel photo stays sharp when they do; a small one turns soft.
- Cropping. Etsy shows your photo in several shapes across the site, and each crop throws pixels away. Starting big means the crop still has detail left.
- Compression. Etsy’s page says images “may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files.” A larger original survives that better.
Etsy also notes that shrinking an image keeps its quality while enlarging one does not: “if you increase the size of an image, you may lose resolution and pixelation may occur.” So you cannot rescue a small phone screenshot by scaling it up to 2000 pixels. Go back to the original camera file instead. Any phone camera from the last several years shoots well past 2000 pixels.
The shape matters as much as the size
Size is the number people search for. Shape is the thing that more often goes wrong.
Etsy’s guidance says the first photo “should be horizontal (landscape) or square”, because that keeps the centre of the image inside the cropped thumbnails. It also says the first photo sets the shape for the photos that follow, so upload the rest in the same shape for a cohesive gallery.
Etsy shows thumbnails in three views: square, portrait and landscape. Its advice for surviving all three:
- Shoot further back than you think you need. Leave empty space around the product so a crop can come in from any side without cutting it.
- Centre the most important part of the item. Every crop keeps the middle.
- Prefer landscape over portrait. A vertical photo loses more to the square and landscape crops.
- Use the thumbnail adjustment tool in the listing editor to preview each crop and nudge the framing before you publish.
A common shape that works: a 4:3 landscape photo at 2667 x 2000 pixels, or a square at 2000 x 2000. Both clear the 2000 pixel recommendation on the short side.
File type, file size and colour
Size in pixels and size on disk are different questions, and Etsy has rules for both.
| Setting | What Etsy says (October 2026) | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| File type | .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic only | Export JPG for photos |
| Animation | Animated GIFs are not supported | Use a listing video instead |
| Transparency | Transparent areas “will appear black” | Flatten PNGs onto a white or real background |
| File size | Files over 1MB “may not finish uploading” on a slow connection | Export JPG at around 80 to 85 percent quality |
| Colour | Etsy converts images to sRGB | Export in sRGB, never CMYK |
The transparency rule catches a lot of printable and digital download sellers. A mockup exported as a transparent PNG shows up with a black background. Flatten it before you upload.
The colour rule matters for anything where the exact shade sells the item: yarn, paint, fabric, candles. If your photos look duller or shifted on Etsy than on your computer, convert them to sRGB before uploading, as Etsy’s page advises.
How to resize Etsy listing photos, step by step
You do not need paid software for this. Etsy’s own page says to use “a website, Photoshop, or a similar software”.
- Start from the original file, never a screenshot or a photo already sent through a messaging app, which shrinks it.
- Crop to your shape first: square or 4:3 landscape, with space around the product.
- Resize so the shorter side is 2000 pixels. If the original is smaller than 2000 pixels, leave it at its full size rather than enlarging it.
- Export as JPG in sRGB at a quality that lands near 1MB.
- Upload in the order shoppers should see them, with your clearest, best lit shot first, since that is the one in search results.
- Check the thumbnail views with the adjustment tool before you publish.
On a computer, the free built-in tools do all of this: Preview on a Mac (Tools, then Adjust Size) and Photos or Paint on Windows. For a whole folder at once, any batch resizer that lets you set the short side to 2000 pixels and the output to JPG will do the job in one pass.
When the manual way is enough
If you sell a handful of items and shoot them on a phone, you may need to do nothing at all. Most phone photos already clear 2000 pixels, phones save in sRGB, and the only step left is cropping to landscape or square with room around the product. Resizing tools matter when you are working from old, small images, from mockup templates, or from a camera that produces files far over 1MB.
Photos are half the listing
A sharp, well framed first photo earns the click. The title, tags and description decide whether the listing appears for the search in the first place, and whether the shopper who clicked has the facts to buy. Etsy also lets you add a text alternative to each listing image, a short description for shoppers using screen readers, which is worth filling while you are in the photo section.
If you are reworking your photos across a shop, it is a good moment to refresh the words too. Quick checklist
- Short side at least 2000 pixels; first photo never under 635 pixels
- First photo landscape or square, the rest in the same shape
- Space around the product, most important part centred
- JPG in sRGB, near 1MB, no transparency
- Best shot first, thumbnail crops previewed before publishing
