Best Things to Sell on Etsy in 2026, and How to Check Your Idea
October 22, 2026
The best things to sell on Etsy are items buyers come to Etsy specifically to find: personalized gifts, handmade jewelry, digital downloads such as printables and planners, home decor and wall art, and handmade clothing and accessories. Etsy’s own trend report for spring and summer 2026 adds a few rising niches inside those groups, such as embroidered and crocheted pieces, journals and journal charms, and gallery wall prints. But the best thing for you to sell is narrower than any list: something you can make well and repeatedly, at a price that pays you, for a phrase shoppers already type. This guide covers the categories, what Etsy says is growing, and how to check your own idea for free before you make twenty of it.
The best things to sell on Etsy, by category
Etsy shoppers are mostly looking for something they cannot get at a big-box store: made by a person, made to order, or found. The categories below suit that shopper, which is why they keep turning up. None of them is easy money. Each one is crowded at the top and has room at the specific end.
| Category | Why it suits Etsy | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized gifts | Names, dates and photos can’t be bought off a shelf | Every order is custom, so mistakes and messages cost time |
| Jewelry | Small, light, cheap to ship, endless styles | Very crowded; photos have to carry the sale |
| Digital downloads | Made once, sold many times, no shipping | Easy to copy, so thousands of near-identical listings |
| Home decor and wall art | Buyers furnish rooms around a style | Shipping large or fragile items eats margin |
| Handmade clothing and accessories | Visible craft that mass retail lacks | Sizing questions and returns |
| Stationery, journals and planners | Gifts, hobbies and the habit of buying more | Low prices mean you need volume |
| Craft supplies and patterns | Makers buy from makers | Buyers compare on price and quantity |
| Wedding and party items | Bought for a date, often in bulk | Deadlines, and every couple wants changes |
Read the right-hand column as carefully as the middle one. A category you like but cannot ship, price or produce at volume is the wrong category for you, however popular it is.
What Etsy’s own 2026 trend report says is rising
Etsy publishes a Seller Trend Report each season, written by its Resident Trend Expert, Dayna Isom Johnson. The spring and summer 2026 edition named five trends, each with figures from Etsy’s own marketplace. As of the report’s data date of February 10, 2026:
| Trend | What Etsy said is growing |
|---|---|
| Soft Stitch Era | Embroidered straw bags up 20,000%, crochet clothing still climbing |
| World of Whimsy | Polka dot phone cases up 835%, whimsical jewelry up 84%, beginner needlepoint kits up 175% |
| Treat Yourself | “Just because” gifts, with “petit cadeau” up 277% |
| Dear Diary | Traveler journal searches doubled, journal charms up 395% |
| Everyday Exhibits | Wall art decor up 110%, gallery prints up 80% |
Two things to keep in mind before you chase one of these. First, the figures are growth rates. Etsy notes they compare the three months to February 10, 2026 with the same period a year earlier, using signed-in shoppers in the US, so a huge percentage on a small niche can still be a small niche. Second, a trend report is read by every seller at once. The report itself frames the trends as ideas for “adding to your inventory” and for “refreshing your listing descriptions and tags”, and the second half of that is often the better use: if you already make crochet bags or prints, describe them in the words the trend uses.
“Searches for wall art decor are up 110% and those for gallery prints have increased by 80%, as shoppers begin to build curated and sometimes nostalgic gallery walls at home.”
That line, from Etsy’s own post, is a good example. A print seller does not need a new product to act on it. They need “gallery wall” in the places a shopper would look.
How to check an idea for free before you make stock
A list tells you what sells for other people. These checks tell you whether your version has a chance. They take about an hour and cost nothing.
- Type the item into the Etsy search bar and read the suggestions. Use a logged-out window. If Etsy suggests longer phrases (“crochet bag pattern”, “crochet bag for women”), shoppers are typing them. If it suggests nothing, few people are. Our guide to finding Etsy keywords for free walks through this method and five others.
- Read page one of the results. Note how many results Etsy reports, the price range, and whether the top listings look like small makers or large production shops. Page one full of shops like yours is a good sign. Page one full of factory listings at prices you can’t match is a warning.
- Look for the specific end of the search. “Earrings” is a crowd. “Polymer clay mushroom earrings” is a niche. Run the search again with your material, style or recipient added and see whether the competition thins while the suggestions keep coming.
- Check the badges and reviews on the top listings. Etsy marks some listings with badges such as Bestseller, and review counts show which listings have been selling for a while. Several reviewed listings for the same specific item means buyers are actually paying for it, not just browsing.
- Do the price sum. Materials, Etsy’s fees, packaging, shipping and your time, against the price page one is charging. If the only way to compete is to pay yourself nothing, pick a different version of the item.
If all five checks look good, list a small batch rather than a big one. Your own Shop Stats will tell you more after a month than any outside data can, because they show what real shoppers typed to find you.
When a paid research tool is worth it
Paid Etsy research tools put estimated sales and keyword data next to listings, which saves time once you are comparing many ideas at once. If you are deciding between two or three items, the free checks above are enough. If you are scanning a whole category for gaps every month, a tool can earn its fee. Our comparisons of the best Etsy SEO tools and EverBee’s plans cover what each one gives you, including what is free.
Digital downloads and print on demand: easy to start, easy to copy
These two get their own section because they are where most new sellers start, and where the advice “anyone can do it” is most misleading.
Digital downloads (planners, printables, templates, patterns) cost nothing to ship and can sell for years. The catch is that a buyer can rarely tell two similar planners apart from a thumbnail, so the shops that do well usually own a narrow niche and describe exactly what the file contains: page count, sizes, file types and what the buyer needs to open it. See how to list digital downloads on Etsy for every field.
Print on demand (shirts, mugs, posters printed and shipped by a partner such as Printify) removes inventory, but the blank product is identical to every other seller’s. Your design and your listing are the whole difference. Etsy also requires print-on-demand sellers to disclose their production partner, which our guide to listing Printify products covers step by step.
What not to sell on Etsy
Some ideas look like easy wins and end in a suspended listing or shop.
- Trademarked characters, logos and team names. Fan art of a famous character is one of the most common reasons listings are removed after a rights holder complains.
- Items Etsy’s policies prohibit, such as certain weapons, hazardous materials and medical claims. Read the policy for your category before you buy materials.
- Resold mass-produced goods presented as handmade. Etsy allows handmade, vintage, craft supplies and designs you created, and expects you to say who made the item.
- AI-generated designs without disclosure. Etsy expects sellers to say when an item was created with AI tools. Our Etsy AI policy guide explains what to disclose and where.
Once you know what to sell, make it findable
Picking the item is half the job. The other half is the listing, because a good item with a vague title and five tags is invisible.
- The title should start with what the item plainly is, then the details a shopper filters by: material, size, style, recipient. See how to write an Etsy title.
- All 13 tags should be multi-word phrases a shopper would type, each up to 20 characters. Our Etsy tags guide shows how to fill every slot.
- The description should answer the questions a buyer would otherwise message you about: size, materials, care, delivery, personalization.
If you are listing many items at once, or rewriting old listings around a trend, writing all of that by hand is the slow part. ListingBrief AI takes a few rough notes about a product and writes an Etsy title inside the 140-character limit, a full set of 13 tags and a description, with 5 free generations a day. You still choose the item. It just means the listing doesn’t hold you back once you have.
When a “best things to sell” list is the wrong starting point
If you already make something and enjoy it, start there instead of a trend list. Run your own item through the five checks, find the specific version shoppers search for, and fix the listing before you change the product. Many shops that look like they have a product problem actually have a findability problem: the item is fine, but the title says “Handmade Gift” and the tags repeat one word. The Etsy SEO tips and how to get your first sale guides are the better next read in that case.
And if you have no product yet, pick one category from the table, one specific version inside it, and list five items. A small shop that learns from real Shop Stats beats a perfect plan that never lists anything.
