Candle Description Generator: What to Feed It, How to Check It
October 10, 2026
A candle description generator turns your notes about a candle into a product description you can paste into Etsy or Shopify. It works well when your notes carry what a photo cannot: the scent, the wax, the size, the burn time and the safety basics. It works badly when you type “cozy vanilla candle” and hope, because then it fills the gaps with guesses, and the guesses it reaches for first are the ones a candle buyer reads most closely: “soy wax”, “cotton wick”, “clean burning”, “non-toxic”. This guide covers what to feed one, how to check the draft, a template for writing it by hand, a full Etsy tag set, and when the manual way is the better choice.
The rule that matters most for candles: a generator must never name a wax, a wick or a health claim you did not state. A candle can be soy, beeswax, coconut blend, paraffin or gel. “Candle” alone tells a tool none of that, and a buyer who chose your listing because it said soy will notice when the label says otherwise.
Why candle descriptions go wrong more often than most
Candles look simple, so people describe them simply. The buyer, though, cannot smell anything through a screen. The description has to do the job of the lid coming off in a shop: what it smells like, how strong it is, how long it lasts and what it is made of.
The questions a candle buyer brings, roughly in the order they ask them:
- What does it smell like? Top, middle and base, or at least the main notes.
- How strong is the scent? Fills a room, or a gentle background?
- What is it made of? Wax type, wick type, fragrance oil or essential oils.
- How big is it, and how long does it burn?
- Is it a gift? Does it come boxed, and is the vessel reusable?
A good draft answers all five. A generator can only do that if your notes contain the answers.
What to feed a candle description generator
Treat the notes as the label, the test burn log and the gift card, typed out. The more of these you include, the less you edit afterwards.
| Note | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Item and style | Scented jar candle, minimalist amber glass | Becomes the opening line and the core of the title |
| Scent name and notes | “Linen Morning”: bergamot, white musk, cedar | The first thing a buyer wants to know |
| Scent strength | Medium throw, fills a bedroom | Sets expectations before the first review does |
| Wax, exactly | Soy and coconut wax blend | Different waxes are different promises |
| Wick | Two cotton wicks | Only if your supplier confirms the material |
| Fragrance source | Phthalate-free fragrance oil | Fragrance oil and essential oil are not the same claim |
| Size | 8 oz / 227 g, jar 8 cm wide | Weights and units vary between shops |
| Burn time | About 40 hours, from your own test burn | A number you measured, never one you guessed |
| Safety basics | Trim wick, never leave burning unattended | Expected on every candle listing |
| Gift details | Gift box, reusable jar, handwritten note | Gives the draft a reason to buy |
You do not need full sentences. “jar candle, Linen Morning, bergamot white musk cedar, medium throw, soy coconut blend, 2 cotton wicks, phthalate-free fragrance oil, 8oz, approx 40h burn tested, reusable amber jar, gift box” is enough for a decent generator to work from.
Anything about wax, wick or health you did not type should not appear in the draft. If it does, delete it, because the tool made it up.
How to use one, step by step
Here is the whole job with ListingBrief AI’s free tool as the example. Most generators follow roughly the same shape.
- Do a test burn. Burn one candle from the batch in sessions and note the total hours. That is your burn time. If you have not tested it, leave burn time out rather than copying a figure from your supplier’s catalogue.
- Check your supplier’s spec sheet for the wax, the wick and the fragrance. Copy the exact wording. “Soy wax” and “soy blend” are different products, and so are “fragrance oil” and “essential oil”.
- Open the generator and paste your notes. On the free Shopify description generator you can do this without an account. It returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
- Pick a tone. A luxury candle line suits a premium voice that leans on scent and vessel. A funny-label candle suits a playful one. ListingBrief AI offers simple, premium, handmade and playful tones next to the default.
- Check the draft line by line against your notes, using the checklist below.
- Paste it into the listing, then add your safety card or warning text in the format your shop already uses.
For an Etsy listing, the same notes on the ListingBrief AI dashboard give you a title, all 13 tags and the description in one go. That saves retyping the scent notes three times when you list a whole collection of scents in the same jar.
Candles are the worked example ListingBrief AI’s writing rules are built around. It will not write “soy wax”, “beeswax”, “cotton wick”, “wood wick”, “non-toxic”, “vegan” or “eco-friendly” unless your notes say so. When a draft slips one in anyway, the claim is removed and the validation panel tells you what was taken out. If the claim is true, add it to your notes and generate again. That is a useful default. It is not a reason to skip the check below, because it is your shop name on the listing.
How to check a generated candle description
Run every draft through these checks before it goes live.
- The wax is named exactly as your supplier names it. Soy, soy blend, coconut soy, beeswax, rapeseed, paraffin, gel. A draft that turns “soy blend” into “100% soy” has made a claim you cannot keep.
- The wick is described only if you described it. Cotton and wood wicks are both common, and a buyer who wanted the crackle of a wood wick will notice a cotton one.
- Every number matches your notes. Weight, jar size, burn time. A number you did not provide comes out.
- Health and eco claims are yours, or absent. “Non-toxic”, “clean burning”, “natural”, “eco-friendly” and “phthalate-free” stay only if you can back them up with your supplier’s documents.
- The scent is described, not just named. “Linen Morning” means nothing to a stranger. Bergamot, white musk and cedar do.
- No filler. “Transform your space into a sanctuary” and “the perfect candle for every occasion” add length and nothing a buyer can act on. Cut them.
If you find yourself fixing more than two lines, your notes were too thin. Add the missing facts and generate again. That is faster than rewriting.
A candle description template you can fill by hand
If you would rather write it yourself, or you want to know what a good draft should look like, this structure works for most jar, tin and pillar candles on Etsy and Shopify:
[Scent name] [candle type], [one-line reason to want it].
[Two sentences on what it smells like and where it suits: bedroom, bath, desk.]
Scent notes: [Top, middle, base, or the main notes.] [Strength.]
Made with: [Exact wax.] [Wick.] [Fragrance oil or essential oils.]
Size and burn time: [Weight, vessel size, tested burn time.]
Candle care: [Trim the wick, first burn, never leave unattended.]
Gift details: [Packaging, reusable vessel, processing time.]
Filled in, it reads like this:
Linen Morning scented jar candle, fresh and quiet for slow weekends.
Bright bergamot over soft white musk, settling into cedar as it burns. A gentle fill for a bedroom or reading corner.
Scent notes: Bergamot, white musk, cedar. Medium scent throw.
Made with: Soy and coconut wax blend. Two cotton wicks. Phthalate-free fragrance oil.
Size and burn time: 8 oz in an 8 cm amber glass jar. About 40 hours, from our own test burns.
Candle care: Trim the wicks before each burn. Let the first burn melt to the edge of the jar. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Gift details: Arrives in a gift box with an optional handwritten note. The jar is reusable once the wax is gone.

Jars, tins and pillars: what each needs most
The template covers every candle, but each kind has one line buyers look for first.
| Candle | The line buyers look for | Common mistake in drafts |
|---|---|---|
| Jar candle | Scent notes and burn time | A burn time nobody tested |
| Travel tin | Size and whether the lid seals | Calling a small tin “long lasting” |
| Pillar or taper | Height, width and whether it drips | Missing measurements for a holder |
| Wood wick candle | The crackle, and how to trim it | Calling a cotton wick a wood wick |
| Novelty or funny-label candle | The label text and the scent | All joke, no scent notes |
| Wax melts | Number of cubes and which warmer suits them | Describing them as a candle |
A 13-tag set for an Etsy candle listing
The description sells the candle. On Etsy, the title and tags are what get it found. Here is a full set for the Linen Morning example, every tag under Etsy’s 20-character limit:
| # | Tag | Angle |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | scented candle | What it is |
| 2 | jar candle | Format |
| 3 | soy blend candle | Material, because the notes state it |
| 4 | bergamot candle | Main scent note |
| 5 | musk candle | Second scent note |
| 6 | fresh linen candle | Scent family |
| 7 | bedroom candle | Where it goes |
| 8 | reading candle | When it is used |
| 9 | candle gift | Gift search |
| 10 | gift for her | Recipient |
| 11 | housewarming gift | Occasion |
| 12 | amber jar candle | Vessel |
| 13 | self care gift | Mood |
Notice what is missing: no “non-toxic candle” or “clean burn candle” tags, because the notes never said so. The rules behind the set are in how to use all 13 Etsy tags, and the full tag sets for six kinds of product show the same pattern for other categories.
Generator or by hand: which suits your shop
| Situation | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One jar in 12 scents | Generator | Keeps descriptions distinct without rewriting each |
| A seasonal drop of 20 to 40 candles | Generator | Same structure every time, notes are fast to type |
| A signature scent with a story behind it | By hand | Your voice is part of what the buyer pays for |
| A custom candle made for one customer | By hand | The details are a conversation, not a template |
| The same scent in jar, tin and melt | Generator for the copy, a size table by hand | One description, one clear table |
When the manual way is enough
A generator is a shortcut for volume. You may not need it if:
- You list a handful of candles a month. Filling the template above by hand is manageable, and you know every scent by heart.
- Your brand voice is the product. If buyers come for the way you write about scent, keep writing it.
- The candle is a one-off. A memorial candle or a custom wedding favour deserves a description nobody else could have written.
In those cases, use the template and the checklist, and skip the tool.
Getting the rest of the listing right
A strong description does little if nobody finds the listing. On Etsy the title carries most of the search work: see how to write an Etsy title. If you sell jewelry or clothing alongside candles, the jewelry description generator guide and the clothing description generator guide cover the facts those categories need.
When you are ready to try it, paste one candle’s notes into the free description generator and compare the draft against the checklist above. If it passes, the rest of the scents will go the same way.
