Etsy Tags Examples: Full 13-Tag Sets for Six Kinds of Product
October 5, 2026
The fastest way to learn Etsy tags is to read finished sets, so here are six: full Etsy tags examples with all 13 tags filled in, for a candle, a necklace, a printable, a mug, a baby gift and a plant pot. Each set is split into the angles a buyer might search from, and each tag fits Etsy’s 20-character limit. Copy the pattern, not the words, because your listing is not any of these six.
If you want the rules before the examples, the complete guide to Etsy tags covers them. This page is the worked version.
The pattern every example follows
Every set below is built from the same five angles. Count them in each example and you will see the split is almost the same, even though the products have nothing in common.
| Angle | Slots | What goes in it |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | 3 | The product named the way a buyer types it |
| Who or what occasion | 3 | Recipient, holiday, event |
| Material or style | 3 | What it is made of, how it looks |
| Use or benefit | 2 | Where it goes, what it does for the buyer |
| Specific detail | 2 | Size, colour, theme, the long-tail phrase |
Two rules hold throughout. Every tag is a phrase of two or three words, and no tag repeats a word-for-word copy of the title. The title already says what the item is; the tags carry the occasion, recipient and style wording the title had no room for.
Example 1: a lavender soy candle
Product notes: hand-poured soy candle, lavender scent, 8 oz amber jar.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | soy candle, lavender candle, amber jar candle |
| Occasion | gift for her, housewarming gift, self care gift |
| Material or style | hand poured candle, minimalist candle, soy wax candle |
| Use | bedroom decor, relaxing scent |
| Detail | 8oz scented candle, calming lavender |
Why it works: “relaxing scent” and “self care gift” speak to what the candle does for the buyer, which a title like “Lavender Soy Candle 8oz” never has room to say. The two near-synonyms (“soy candle” and “soy wax candle”) are deliberate. They are different phrases a buyer might type, not a padded repeat.
Example 2: a sterling silver initial necklace
Product notes: sterling silver, dainty letter pendant, adjustable chain, comes in a gift box.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | initial necklace, letter necklace, dainty necklace |
| Occasion | bridesmaid gift, birthday gift, mothers day gift |
| Material or style | sterling silver, minimalist jewelry, silver pendant |
| Use | everyday necklace, layering necklace |
| Detail | personalized jewelry, custom letter charm |
Why it works: jewelry is a crowded field, so the occasion group does the heavy lifting. “bridesmaid gift” is a search by someone with a deadline and a reason to buy. Note “sterling silver” is two words and ties directly to the material. One-word tags such as “jewelry” or “silver” would match almost anything and tell Etsy very little.
Example 3: a digital wedding budget printable
Product notes: PDF instant download, wedding budget tracker, prints at A4 or US Letter.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | wedding budget, budget tracker, wedding planner |
| Occasion | engagement gift, bride to be |
| Material or style | printable pdf, instant download, minimalist planner |
| Use | wedding checklist, planning binder, budget worksheet |
| Detail | us letter printable, a4 printable |
Why it works: a digital product has no material, so the “material” group becomes the format: buyers really do search “instant download” and “printable pdf”. The use group is larger here (three tags) and the occasion group smaller (two), because the buyer of a printable searches by the task they want finished. The split is a guide. Move a slot where your product’s buyer actually searches.
Example 4: a ceramic mug with a hand-drawn design
Product notes: 11 oz ceramic mug, hand-drawn mountain illustration, dishwasher safe.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | mountain mug, ceramic coffee mug, 11oz mug |
| Occasion | hiking gift, gift for dad, camping gift |
| Material or style | hand drawn mug, minimalist mug, nature lover mug |
| Use | dishwasher safe mug, office coffee cup |
| Detail | outdoor lover gift, mountain coffee cup |
Why it works: the theme (mountains, hiking, camping) is the thing a gift buyer searches for, so it appears in three groups. Repetition of a theme across groups is fine. Repetition of an identical phrase is the waste. “dishwasher safe mug” answers a real buyer question and is specific enough to be a phrase someone types.
Example 5: a knitted baby blanket
Product notes: chunky merino-blend knit, 30 by 40 inch, soft, neutral colours.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | baby blanket, knit baby blanket, chunky knit throw |
| Occasion | baby shower gift, newborn gift, new mom gift |
| Material or style | merino blend blanket, neutral nursery, handmade blanket |
| Use | stroller blanket, nursery decor |
| Detail | gender neutral baby, swaddle alternative |
Why it works: the buyer is rarely the parent. “baby shower gift” and “new mom gift” aim at the person buying for them. “gender neutral baby” is a long-tail phrase with fewer competing listings than “baby blanket”. Check each tag against the item before you use it: “swaddle alternative” is only honest if the blanket can be used that way.
Example 6: a hand-thrown plant pot
Product notes: stoneware pot, 4 inch, drainage hole and saucer, speckled glaze.
| Angle | Tags |
|---|---|
| What it is | ceramic planter, plant pot, succulent pot |
| Occasion | plant lover gift, housewarming gift, mothers day gift |
| Material or style | speckled stoneware, handmade pottery, modern planter |
| Use | desk plant pot, windowsill decor |
| Detail | pot with saucer, small cactus pot |
Why it works: the two size and feature tags (“pot with saucer”, “small cactus pot”) match the narrow searches of someone who already knows what they need. Those long-tail phrases are where a small shop can beat a large one.
What the six examples have in common
- Every slot is used. None of the sets leaves a tag empty.
- Almost every tag is a phrase. The few two-word tags are the shortest natural way to say the thing.
- No tag is a claim the item cannot back. A tag that sends the wrong buyer to the listing earns a click and no sale.
- The occasion group changes most between products. A mug and a necklace share almost no gift tags.
Nobody outside Etsy can say how much weight each tag carries in search, so treat these as coverage, not a formula. The point is that 13 different phrases give your listing 13 different chances to match a query.
How to build your own set in ten minutes
- Write four lines of notes. What it is, what it is made of, who buys it, what it is for.
- Fill the table above for your product. Start with the occasion group, because it is the one most sellers skip.
- Check the length. Etsy allows up to 20 characters per tag. “personalized jewelry” is exactly 20, and “mothers day gift” is 16. Anything longer needs trimming.
- Cross out duplicates. If two tags are the same phrase in a different order, keep one and spend the slot elsewhere.
- Paste them in and read them back as a buyer. Would you type each phrase?
Step 2 is the slow part. If you would rather start from a draft, the free Etsy tag generator takes the same product notes and returns 13 multi-word tags in one go. Treat its output as a draft and run it through steps 3 to 5, because you know the item and it does not.
When writing tags by hand is enough
If you have a handful of listings and a clear idea of how your buyers talk, the table above is all you need. A tool earns its place when you have dozens of listings to refresh and the notes already exist. Either way, the tags only work alongside a clear title, so write that next with the Etsy title generator or the steps in how to write an Etsy title.
