Etsy Title Examples: Six Before-and-After Rewrites You Can Copy
October 6, 2026
The quickest way to learn a good listing title is to see a bad one fixed. Below are six Etsy title examples, each shown as the stuffed first draft many sellers write and then rewritten into something a buyer can read in half a second. Every rewrite names the item once, puts the checkable facts first, and stays far under Etsy’s 140-character limit.
If you want the rules behind the examples, how to write an Etsy title covers them. This page is the worked version: copy the pattern, not the words, because your listing is not any of these six.
The pattern every rewrite follows
Each “after” title is built in the same order, and you can count the parts in every example.
| Part | What goes in it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| The item | What it is, in the words a buyer types, said once | Ceramic Mug |
| The distinguishing trait | The one detail that sets it apart on a results page | Speckled Blue |
| Material or size | Something a buyer can check | 12 oz Stoneware |
| Care, format or extra | Dishwasher safe, PDF, gift box | Dishwasher Safe |
Three habits separate the rewrites from the drafts. Each item is named once. Opinion words such as “beautiful” and “perfect” are gone. And the gift, occasion and style wording moved out of the title into the tags and the description, where it still works.
Example 1: a lavender soy candle
Product notes: hand-poured soy candle, lavender scent, 8 oz amber jar.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Beautiful Lavender Candle Perfect Gift for Her Soy Wax Candle Relaxing Scented Candle Best Seller |
| After | Lavender Soy Candle, 8 oz Amber Jar, Hand Poured, Calming Scented Candle |
Why it works: the draft says “candle” three times and spends the front of the title on “Beautiful”, which tells nobody anything. The rewrite opens with the scent and the material, then gives the size and the container, which is what a shopper uses to tell two lavender candles apart. “Perfect Gift for Her” and “Best Seller” are gone from the title and “gift for her” moves to a tag.
Example 2: a sterling silver initial necklace
Product notes: sterling silver, dainty letter pendant, adjustable chain, comes in a gift box.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Gorgeous Initial Necklace Personalized Letter Necklace Silver Necklace Gift for Her Birthday Gift Jewelry |
| After | Sterling Silver Initial Necklace, Dainty Letter Pendant, Adjustable Chain, Gift Box |
Why it works: the draft names the same necklace three ways. The rewrite names it once and then adds three new facts: the metal, the pendant style and the chain. “Gift Box” stays because the box ships with the necklace, so it describes the item. “Birthday Gift” was about the buyer’s plans, so it becomes a tag.
Example 3: a digital wedding budget printable
Product notes: PDF instant download, wedding budget tracker, prints at A4 or US Letter.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Wedding Budget Planner Printable Wedding Planner Budget Template Wedding Checklist Digital Download PDF |
| After | Wedding Budget Tracker Printable, PDF Instant Download, A4 and US Letter |
Why it works: a digital product has to answer two questions before a click: what is it, and what do I get. The draft crams “planner”, “template” and “checklist” in as if they were three products. The rewrite says tracker, then states the format and the two paper sizes. Those paper sizes are the detail that stops a buyer in the US and a buyer in Europe from both guessing.
Example 4: a ceramic mug
Product notes: speckled blue glaze, 12 oz stoneware, thrown by hand, dishwasher safe.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Coffee Mug Coffee Cup Funny Mug Gift for Coffee Lovers Unique Handmade Ceramic Mug Best Gift |
| After | Speckled Blue Ceramic Mug, 12 oz Stoneware, Hand Thrown, Dishwasher Safe |
Why it works: “Mug” and “Coffee Cup” are one idea twice, and “Gift” appears twice as well. A mug is a mug that someone might give, so the gift wording is a tag and not part of the title. The rewrite leads with colour and finish, because the glaze is what makes this mug different from every plain white one on the page.
Example 5: a knitted baby blanket
Product notes: hand-knitted, soft cotton yarn, 30 x 40 inches, machine washable.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Cute Baby Blanket Knitted Blanket Baby Shower Gift Newborn Gift Soft Blanket Nursery Decor |
| After | Knitted Baby Blanket, Soft Cotton Yarn, 30 x 40 in, Machine Washable |
Why it works: a parent reading a results grid wants size and washing instructions before they want a mood. The draft has two gift phrases and “Nursery Decor” for a blanket that is not decor. The rewrite gives the material, the dimensions and the care instruction. Baby shower and newborn wording belong in the tags, where a search for those occasions can still find the listing.
Example 6: a hand-thrown plant pot
Product notes: ceramic, 5 inch, drainage hole and saucer included.
| Title | |
|---|---|
| Before | Plant Pot Planter Flower Pot Indoor Plant Pot Succulent Pot Home Decor Gift for Plant Lovers |
| After | Hand Thrown Ceramic Plant Pot, 5 Inch Planter with Drainage Hole and Saucer |
Why it works: the draft lists four names for a pot. The rewrite states how it is made, the material and the size, then the two features a plant owner checks first: drainage and a saucer. A drainage hole decides whether the pot works for a given plant, so it earns a place in the title.
What the six rewrites have in common
- The item is named once. Count it in each “after” title.
- Every phrase adds a new fact. Material, size, format, care or a feature a buyer can verify.
- No opinion words. “Beautiful”, “gorgeous”, “unique” and “perfect” are all in the drafts and none in the rewrites.
- No price, shipping or sale language. Etsy shows those next to the title already.
- Lengths are short. Each rewrite is well under 100 characters, and the limit is 140. A title that fills the whole limit is usually the stuffed draft.
Nobody outside Etsy can say how much weight a title word carries in search, so treat these as readable, accurate titles and not a formula. What you can control is whether a shopper scanning a grid understands the listing before they click.
When an occasion word belongs in the title
The rule is that occasion and recipient words stay out unless they describe what the item literally is. That means some titles keep them:
- A wedding guest book is for weddings, so “Wedding” is the item.
- A birthday candle set is made for cakes, so “Birthday” is part of the product.
- A Halloween costume is a costume for one night, so the holiday stays.
A mug, a necklace or a blanket is not like that. Those are gifts only because someone chooses to give them, so the gift wording is better spent in tags and the description. For worked tag sets with the same six products, see Etsy tags examples.
How to rewrite your own title in five minutes
- Write the draft you would normally write, then count how many times it names the item. Cut it to once.
- List four facts from your product notes: material, size, colour or finish, and care or format.
- Reorder so the item and the most distinguishing fact come first, since results grids shorten long titles.
- Delete every opinion word and every gift or sale phrase, and note which of them should become a tag.
- Read it aloud as a buyer. If a phrase would not help someone choose between two similar listings, it does not belong.
Step 2 is the slow one when you have dozens of listings. If you would rather start from a draft, paste your product notes into the free Etsy title generator and edit what it returns against steps 1 to 5, because you know the item and it does not. For a whole shop, bulk listing on Etsy covers doing this at scale.
When writing titles by hand is enough
With a handful of listings and a clear sense of how your buyers talk, the table at the top and the checklist above are all you need. A tool earns its place when you have a shop full of old, stuffed titles to tidy and the product notes already exist.
