Furniture Description Examples: How to Describe Furniture That Sells

A good furniture description tells a buyer what the piece is, exactly how big it is, what it is made of, what condition it is in, how it arrives and whether it will fit through their door. Those are the questions a photo cannot answer, and furniture is the category where getting one wrong is most expensive: a return means freight both ways. This guide gives you furniture description examples for five common pieces, a fill-in template, the claims you should only make when you can back them up, a full Etsy tag set, and a faster way to write descriptions when you list a whole room or a whole estate sale at once.

The rule that matters most for furniture: give every dimension a buyer needs to make it fit, in the units they think in. Width, depth and height are the minimum. Seat height, clearance under a table and the narrowest part of the piece in transit are what stop a sale turning into a return.

What a furniture description has to answer

Buyers of furniture ask the same questions, in roughly this order:

  1. What is it, and where does it go? A coffee table for a small living room, a dining chair, a bedside table.
  2. Will it fit? Overall dimensions, and the ones that matter for its use.
  3. What is it made of? Solid wood, veneer, metal, upholstery fabric, and the finish.
  4. What condition is it in? New, handmade to order, vintage with wear, restored.
  5. How heavy is it, and how does it arrive? Assembled, flat packed, local pickup only.
  6. How do I look after it?

A description that answers all six rarely gets a question. Furniture buyers who cannot find an answer usually do not message. They leave, because the risk of guessing is a sofa they cannot return.

Measurements: the part buyers read twice

Every piece needs width, depth and height. Each kind of piece then has one or two measurements buyers look for before anything else.

Piece The measurement buyers look for Common mistake
Coffee table Height, so it sits level with the sofa seat Only giving the top size
Dining table Seats how many, and knee clearance under the apron “Seats 6” with no clearance
Dining or desk chair Seat height and seat depth Overall height only
Sofa or armchair Seat depth, seat height, arm height No doorway or transit size
Bookshelf Shelf depth and the gap between shelves No shelf load guidance
Bedside table Height against a typical mattress, drawer size Drawer size missing
Dresser Drawer interior size, and whether it needs wall anchoring Exterior size only

Give measurements in both centimetres and inches if you sell internationally. For anything large, add the narrowest dimension of the piece as it travels, so a buyer can check it against their stairs and doorways.

The claims to make only when they are true

Furniture listings attract a handful of words that buyers take as promises. Use them only when you can stand behind them.

Claim When you can make it What to write instead
Solid wood Every visible and structural part is solid timber “Oak veneer over MDF” or “solid oak top, veneered sides”
Real leather The upholstery is leather, not bonded or faux “Faux leather” or “bonded leather”
Mid century or antique You know the date or maker, or say it is “style” “Mid century style”
Reclaimed or recycled You know where the wood came from Leave it out
Non-toxic finish The finish maker documents it Name the finish and let the buyer judge
Pet friendly or kid safe You can say what makes it so Describe the fabric or the rounded corners
Weight capacity You tested it or the maker states it Leave it out

“Solid wood” is the claim buyers check first. A buyer who finds veneer under a chip after being told it was solid will leave a review every later buyer reads. Mixed construction is common and perfectly sellable. Just say which parts are which.

A furniture description template

Fill the brackets. Leave a line out rather than guess.

[Two sentences on how it looks and feels: style, grain, texture, the detail that makes it this piece.]

Dimensions: [Width x depth x height.] [The use measurement: seat height, clearance, shelf gap.] [Narrowest size in transit, for large pieces.]

Materials: [Solid wood, veneer, metal, fabric, and which parts are which.] [Finish.]

Condition: [New, made to order, or vintage.] [Any marks, wear or repairs, plainly.]

Delivery: [Assembled or flat packed, tools included or not.] [Weight.] [Shipping or local pickup.]

Care: [How to clean it.] [What to avoid: direct sun, standing water, heat.]

Five furniture description examples

These use the template on five common pieces. The facts are made up for illustration; yours should come from your own measurements and notes.

A coffee table

Walnut coffee table with tapered legs, a low rectangular table for a small living room.

A warm oiled walnut top with the grain running end to end, on four splayed legs that keep it light to look at.

Dimensions: 100 x 50 cm, 42 cm tall (39 x 20 x 16.5 in). Sits just under most sofa seats.

Materials: Solid walnut top and legs. Hard wax oil finish.

Condition: New, made to order in 3 to 4 weeks.

Delivery: Legs screw on by hand, no tools needed. 14 kg.

Care: Wipe with a damp cloth. Use coasters for hot drinks.

A dining chair

Set of two oak dining chairs with woven seats, for a farmhouse or Scandinavian table.

Dimensions: 45 cm wide, 50 cm deep, 80 cm tall. Seat height 46 cm, which suits a standard 75 cm table.

Materials: Solid oak frame, natural paper cord seat. Clear matte lacquer.

Condition: New. Sold as a pair.

A vintage sideboard

1960s style teak sideboard with sliding doors, a long low cabinet for a dining room or under a TV.

Dimensions: 180 x 45 x 75 cm. The narrowest size in transit is 45 cm.

Materials: Teak veneer over a wooden carcass, solid teak legs. Original finish, lightly cleaned.

Condition: Vintage. A few light scratches on the top, shown in photo 6. One door runner replaced. Drawers slide smoothly.

Delivery: Local pickup or courier quote. 38 kg.

Notice “1960s style” rather than “1960s Danish”: without a maker’s mark or paperwork, the honest version is the one that does not get disputed.

A bookshelf

Tall pine bookshelf with five fixed shelves, painted white, for a hallway or home office.

Dimensions: 80 x 30 x 180 cm. Shelf gap 32 cm, deep enough for most paperbacks and records.

Materials: Solid pine, water based white paint.

Delivery: Arrives assembled. Wall anchoring kit included and recommended.

An upholstered armchair

Green velvet armchair with a curved back, a compact reading chair for a bedroom or corner.

Dimensions: 72 cm wide, 78 cm deep, 80 cm tall. Seat height 44 cm, seat depth 52 cm, arm height 60 cm.

Materials: Polyester velvet over foam, beech frame, oak legs.

Condition: New. Legs unscrew for delivery.

Care: Vacuum with a soft brush. Blot spills, do not rub.

A 13-tag Etsy set for a furniture listing

On Etsy, the title and tags get the piece found and the description sells it once someone clicks. Here is a full set for the walnut coffee table above, each tag under Etsy’s 20-character limit:

# Tag Angle
1 walnut coffee table What it is
2 wood coffee table Material search
3 mid century style Style
4 modern coffee table Style
5 small coffee table Size
6 living room table Room
7 handmade table Maker search
8 tapered leg table Detail
9 low table Shape
10 walnut furniture Material search
11 minimalist table Style
12 apartment furniture Audience
13 housewarming gift Occasion

There is no “reclaimed wood” or “eco table” tag because the notes never said so. The thinking behind a set like this is in how to use all 13 Etsy tags, and the free Etsy tag generator drafts a set from your notes.

Writing furniture descriptions faster

One description by hand is fine. A dozen after a restoration batch, or forty from a house clearance, is where it gets slow and where copy-paste errors creep in: the sideboard that still says “seat height 46 cm” because it started as the chair listing.

A description generator helps when you feed it the facts the template asks for. Here is the whole job, with ListingBrief AI as the example.

  1. Write short notes per piece. “teak veneer sideboard, solid teak legs, 180x45x75cm, sliding doors, 2 light scratches on top, one runner replaced, 38kg, pickup or courier” is enough.
  2. Paste them into the free Shopify description generator for one description plus a page title and meta description, no account needed. For Etsy, the ListingBrief AI dashboard returns a title, 13 tags and the description from the same notes.
  3. Choose a tone. Simple suits flat-pack and everyday pieces, premium suits statement furniture, and handmade suits maker-built work. Playful and the default are there too.
  4. Check the draft against your tape measure and the claims table above.
  5. Paste it into the listing, with your standard delivery and returns text if it lives elsewhere.

ListingBrief AI is written not to add a material, a measurement or a claim your notes do not contain. “Non-toxic”, “recycled”, “sustainable” and “eco friendly” are among the terms it strips mechanically when your notes do not state them, and the validation panel tells you what was removed. “Solid wood” and “real leather” fall under the same writing rule rather than that removal list, so read every draft for them yourself. If a claim is true, add it to your notes and generate again.

How to check a furniture description before it goes live

When writing by hand is enough

A generator earns its place on volume. Skip it if:

The rest of the listing

The description is one of three fields. The title does most of the search work on Etsy, so read how to write an Etsy title before you rename a shop of tables. Etsy’s category attributes matter for furniture filters too, and Etsy attributes explained covers every one. If you sell ceramics or lamps alongside furniture, the pottery description guide covers those claims.

When you are ready, paste one piece’s notes into the free description generator, measure the piece once more, and check the draft against the list above.
