How to Add Variants in Shopify: Options, Limits and Bulk Edits

To add a variant in Shopify, open the product in your Shopify admin, find the Variants section, click + Add options like size or color, type an option name such as Size, enter each value (Small, Medium, Large), click Done and then Save. Shopify creates one variant for every combination of values, and from then on each variant carries its own price, stock and shipping details. This guide covers those steps, the limits Shopify sets (as of October 2026), the four ways to add a variant to a product that already has some, and how to fill in prices and stock without opening every variant one by one.

What a variant is in Shopify

A variant is one specific version of a product that a customer can pick. Shopify builds variants from options and option values. Its help centre uses a T-shirt as the example: the options are size and colour, size has the values small, medium and large, colour has blue and green, and “a small, blue T-shirt” is one variant.

So the number of variants is the values multiplied together. Three sizes and two colours make six variants. Add a third option with two materials and you have twelve.

One detail catches people out the first time. Shopify’s help centre says that when you add variants to a product, the Price, Inventory and Shipping settings move off the product page and onto each variant’s own details page. If you set a price before adding variants, check every variant afterwards.

How to add variants in Shopify, step by step

These are the desktop steps from Shopify’s help page Adding variants, as of October 2026:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Click the product you want to edit.
  3. In the Variants section, click + Add options like size or color.
  4. In Option name, enter a name such as Size. Customers see this name.
  5. In Option values, enter each value, such as Small, Medium and Large. Customers see these when they choose a variant.
  6. Optional: click + Add another option to add Colour or Material.
  7. Click Done, then Save.

After you save, Shopify lists every combination. Click any variant to open its details page and set its price, SKU, barcode, stock and image.

Naming options so customers understand them

The option name and values are shown on your product page, so write them the way a buyer would say them:

Shopify variant limits to know first

Limit Value (Shopify help centre, October 2026)
Options per product 3
Variants per product 2,048
Media items per product 250
Media items per variant 1, chosen from the product’s media
New variants per day by app or CSV 10,000, only for stores with 500,000 or more variants (Shopify Plus is exempt)

Two more points from the same page matter if you go past 100 variants on one product. Shopify notes that some third-party themes, apps and sales channels “might not support more than 100 variants”, and that the Stocky app and the legacy Order Printer app do not. If your catalogue relies on one of those, check with the developer before you build a 300-variant product.

For a product that needs more than three options or more than 2,048 variants, Shopify points to a third-party app from the Shopify App Store or theme code that collects line item properties from the customer. Engraving text is the usual case: it is a custom input rather than a fixed list of values.

Four ways to add a variant to an existing product

Once a product has options, Shopify gives you several routes for adding more. They differ in how many variants each one creates.

Method What it creates Best for
Add a value to an existing option Every combination with the new value A new colour across all sizes
Add variant One variant A single extra combination
Duplicate a variant One variant, copying the original’s details A near-copy with one value changed
Duplicate several variants (bulk action) One new variant per variant selected A new colour that shares an existing colour’s price and stock setup

Add a value to an option

In the Variants section, click Edit next to the option, type the new value into Add another value, click Done and save. Shopify’s example: with three sizes and two colours, adding Yellow creates the three yellow sizes at once.

Add a single variant

Click Add variant and fill in the option values. At least one value must be new, because Shopify will not save an exact duplicate of a variant that already exists. Shopify notes that this route “creates only a single variant” and does not fill in the other combinations.

Duplicate one or many variants

Click a variant and choose Duplicate, then change at least one option value before saving. The copy keeps the original’s details, which saves retyping a price and weight. To do this for several at once, select the similar variants and use the duplicate bulk action. Shopify’s own case is a T-shirt where the yellow shirts are limited edition, cost more and sit in another warehouse: duplicating the yellow variants to make green ones carries those prices, quantities and locations over.

There is also a fifth route for stores that keep colours and materials consistent across many products: connecting an option to a category metafield. The values become reusable entries, so renaming Black to Graphite once updates every product using it, and colour entries can show as swatches on the storefront.

Editing prices and stock on many variants at once

Setting the price on twelve variants one page at a time is slow. Shopify offers two faster ways, as of October 2026.

From the product page. You can change a variant’s image, price and available inventory right in the Variants list. Inventory needs you to filter by location first. If your variants are grouped (by colour, say), changing the top row’s price or image changes every variant in that group, so open the group to change one.

With the bulk editor. In the Variants section, tick the variants you want (or the top checkbox for all of them) and click Bulk edit. Each row is a variant and each column is a field, so you can type one price into a column and apply it down twenty rows. Our Shopify bulk editor guide covers choosing columns, typing one value into many cells and the most common save error. One limit from that guide: a product with several variants has its inventory bulk edited from the Inventory section, not the Products bulk editor.

Adding variants with a CSV import

For a whole catalogue, a product CSV is the bulk route. Each variant is its own row, every row of one product shares the same URL handle, and the option columns (Option1 name and value, and so on) say which variant the row is. Two warnings carry over from Shopify’s CSV help page:

Our Shopify product CSV template guide walks through every column, including how to lay out variant rows and extra images.

Where the time actually goes

The clicks above take a minute. What takes longer is deciding what the options should be and writing the words around them: the title, the description that says what changes between sizes, and the SEO fields. That work is the same whether a product has one variant or twelve.

ListingBrief AI takes a few rough notes about a product and returns the Shopify fields made of words: product title, description, SEO title, meta description, product type, vendor, tags, collections, and a suggested set of option names with their values. From the mug in our example notes (“11oz”), it suggests a variant you can confirm or change. How you use the result:

It does not set prices or count stock. An account gets 5 free generations a day, and pricing covers more. If you only want a description to start from, the free Shopify description generator needs no signup.

When the manual way is enough

Most stores never need anything beyond the Variants section.

Reach for a CSV or a generator when you are adding many products at once, or when the writing, rather than the clicking, is what is holding the listing back. If you are still setting up the product itself, start with how to add a product on Shopify.

A checklist before you save

Then preview the product page, pick a few combinations as a customer would, and check each shows the right price and photo.
