How to Write a Shop Description: Examples for Etsy and Shopify
October 7, 2026
To write a shop description, say what you sell, who it is for and what makes it yours, in that order, in one sentence a stranger can read in three seconds. Then put the longer story somewhere else: the About section, the policies, the listings. Most shop descriptions fail for the opposite reason. They open with the founder’s story and never say what is on the shelves.
This guide covers where a shop description actually lives on Etsy and on Shopify, the limits each field has, a simple formula, and a set of before-and-after examples you can adapt. It also covers the part people skip: how the shop description connects to the listings underneath it, which is where most search traffic lands.
What a “shop description” means on each platform
Neither Etsy nor Shopify has a single box labelled “shop description”. The idea is spread across a few fields, and each one has a different job.
| Field | Platform | Where it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shop title | Etsy | Under your shop name, and in Google results | 55 characters |
| Shop announcement | Etsy | Your shop homepage | Etsy asks you to keep it short |
| About section | Etsy | The About part of your shop page | Long form |
| Homepage title | Shopify | Browser tab and search results | Up to 70 characters, about 60 shows in full |
| Homepage meta description | Shopify | Under the title in search results | About 160 characters recommended |
The figures above come from Etsy’s and Shopify’s own help pages, read as of October 2026. Etsy’s help page on the shop title says it plainly:
Shop titles can be up to 55 characters long. They appear right under your shop name on your shop homepage. Many sellers make it a tagline or slogan, or they state what they sell.
The same Etsy page notes that the shop title “is one aspect of your shop that you can use to influence Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”, and that you see a preview of how it will look in Google when you edit it. That makes the shop title the closest thing Etsy has to a shop description, and the one line worth the most care.
On Shopify, the equivalent is the homepage title and meta description. Shopify’s help centre says to set them under Online Store > Preferences, and recommends about 160 characters for the meta description, written as “natural, readable phrases, rather than lists of keywords.”
How to write a shop description: the one-line formula
Start with the short version, because every other field grows out of it. Fill in three slots:
- What you sell, in the words a buyer would type. “Ceramic mugs”, not “functional art for the everyday ritual”.
- Who it is for or what it is for. “For coffee lovers”, “for small kitchens”, “for new parents”.
- The one thing that is yours. Handmade, personalised, made to order, a place, a material, a style.
Put together, that reads: Handmade ceramic mugs and bowls for slow mornings, thrown in small batches in Vermont. It says what is on the shelf, gives a reason to care, and names a detail nobody else can claim.
Then cut it to fit. For an Etsy shop title, 55 characters is tight, so keep the product and one qualifier: Handmade ceramic mugs and bowls, small batch is 44 characters. For a Shopify meta description you have room for the whole sentence plus a reason to click.
A test worth running: read only your shop title to someone who has never seen the shop and ask what you sell. If they cannot answer, the line is a slogan, and slogans rarely work as a buyer’s first line.
Shop description examples: before and after
These are invented shops, written to show the pattern. Adapt the structure, then swap in your own products and details.
| Shop | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | Where dreams become treasures | Dainty gold-filled necklaces and stacking rings, made to order |
| Printables | Hi! Welcome to my little corner of the internet | Printable wall art and planners for home offices, instant download |
| Candles | Light up your life | Soy candles in small glass jars, scented with essential oils |
| Baby goods | Made with love by a mum of three | Personalised baby blankets and name signs for nurseries |
| Stickers | Fun stuff for fun people! | Waterproof vinyl stickers for laptops and water bottles |
| Leather | Quality you can feel | Hand-stitched leather wallets and card holders, built to last years |
Notice what changed in each row. The “before” lines describe a feeling. The “after” lines name the product, add one detail that sorts buyers (gold-filled, instant download, essential oils, personalised), and drop the greeting. The feeling can stay, but it goes in the About section, after the buyer already knows they are in the right shop.
Longer examples for a Shopify meta description
On Shopify you have about twice the room, so add the reason to click:
- Dainty gold-filled necklaces and stacking rings, made to order in our studio. Free gift wrap on every order and easy 30-day returns.
- Printable wall art and planners for home offices. Download instantly, print at home or at any copy shop, in A4 and US Letter sizes.
Only promise what your policies actually say. If returns are 14 days, the meta description says 14 days.
How to write the About section and announcement
Once the one line is right, the longer fields stop being hard, because they only expand it.
The Etsy shop announcement. Etsy’s help page describes the announcement as a place to alert shoppers to “important information like a sale or if you are away on vacation”, and it tells sellers to “Keep your announcement short and sweet.” Treat it as a noticeboard rather than a bio:
- current processing time, if it is longer than usual;
- a sale or a seasonal cutoff date (“order by December 10 for Christmas delivery”);
- how personalisation works, if most of your listings offer it;
- the date, as the first line, if your shop language is not English (Etsy notes the posted date may not update in that case).
The About section. This is where the story goes, and it can be as warm as you like. A shape that works:
- One paragraph on who makes the products and where.
- One paragraph on how they are made (materials, process, how long an order takes).
- One paragraph on what buyers can expect: packaging, care, how to reach you.
Keep the same product words you used in the shop title. A buyer who arrives from a search for “soy candles” should see “soy candles” again when they read about you.
Mistakes that make a shop description vague
These come up again and again when shops are reviewed:
- Opening with a greeting. “Hi and welcome!” uses up the first words, which are the ones a buyer actually reads.
- Listing every category. “Jewellery, candles, art, clothing, gifts and more” tells the buyer you are unfocused. Name the two things you sell most.
- Keyword stuffing. A shop title like “necklace gold necklace dainty necklace gift” reads as spam, and Shopify’s own guidance asks for readable phrases instead.
- Promising what the policies do not say. Free shipping, fast delivery or returns belong in a description only if the shop settings agree.
- Writing it once and forgetting it. When your best seller changes, the shop title should change with it.
Why the listings matter more than the shop description
Here is the honest part. A shop description sets the tone for people who reach your shop page, but most buyers on Etsy never see it first. They search for a product and land on a single listing. The listing title, its tags and its description are what decide whether you are found and whether they buy.
So once your shop line is done, the bigger job is making every listing say the same thing in the same buyer words. That is where a shop with 40 listings usually has the most room to improve, and where most of the work is:
- How to write Etsy titles in 2026 covers the title, the one field search reads first.
- Etsy tags: how to use all 13 covers the tags.
- How to write Etsy product descriptions covers the listing description itself.
- Etsy description examples has six before-and-after rewrites if you want to see the pattern applied.
The faster way to do the listing half
Writing a shop title by hand is a ten-minute job and does not need a tool. Rewriting the title, 13 tags and description for every listing underneath it is the slow part. ListingBrief AI takes your product notes and drafts an Etsy title, tags and description, or a Shopify-ready product listing, so you edit a draft instead of starting from a blank box. It is free to try for five generations a day, and there are free title and tag tools too.
Treat any draft the way you would treat your own first draft: read it, check every claim against the actual product, and keep your own voice where it matters.
When the manual way is enough
You do not need anything beyond this guide if:
- your shop sells one clear kind of product and the title already names it;
- you have fewer than a dozen listings and can rewrite them in an afternoon;
- your traffic comes mostly from social media, where people already know you before they reach the shop.
In each case, write the one line, fill the announcement with what is current, and spend the saved time on photos.
A quick checklist
Before you save, check each field against this list:
| Check | Etsy shop title | Shopify meta description |
|---|---|---|
| Names the product in buyer words | Yes | Yes |
| Fits the limit | 55 characters | About 160 characters |
| One detail that is yours | Yes | Yes |
| No greeting, no keyword list | Yes | Yes |
| Every promise matches your policies | Yes | Yes |
Get the one line right first. Everything else on the shop page, and every listing under it, is easier to write once you can say what you sell in a single sentence.
