Denim Jeans Description: How to Describe Jeans, With Six Examples
October 21, 2026
A good denim jeans description answers the questions that decide whether a pair comes back: what the rise and fit are, how long the inseam is, whether the denim stretches, how heavy and dark it is, and, for vintage, the measurements taken flat and any wear. Open with one line naming the cut and the wash, then give those facts in short labelled lines a buyer can scan on a phone. Below you will find the checklist, a fill-in template, six jeans description examples you can adapt, the mistakes that cause returns, and a faster way to write descriptions when you list many pairs.
The rule that matters most for jeans: give measurements, not just a size. A size 28 from one brand is a size 30 from another, and a vintage tag can be decades out of date. The waist, rise and inseam in inches are what a buyer actually compares.
What a jeans buyer wants to know first
Jeans are bought on fit more than almost any other garment. The questions buyers bring, roughly in order:
- What is the cut? Skinny, straight, bootcut, wide leg, mom, boyfriend.
- Where does it sit? Low, mid or high rise.
- Will it fit me? Waist and inseam in inches, and whether to size up or down.
- Does it stretch? Rigid cotton, or a blend with elastane.
- What does the denim look like and feel like? Wash, colour, weight, raw or washed.
- For vintage: what condition is it in? Fading, repairs, hem, marks.
Fit and stretch decide most denim returns. Answer both in the first few lines.
What to include in a jeans description
Gather these notes before you write:
| Detail | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | High rise straight leg | The first word most shoppers search |
| Rise | High rise, about 11 inches front rise | Two pairs in one size fit differently by rise alone |
| Waist | 28 inches, measured flat and doubled | More reliable than the label size |
| Inseam | 30 inches, unhemmed | Decides whether the buyer needs a tailor |
| Leg opening | 7 inches flat | Tells skinny from straight from flare |
| Fabric | 100% cotton, or cotton with 2% elastane | Rigid and stretch denim fit very differently |
| Weight | Lightweight, midweight, heavyweight | Warmth, drape and break-in time |
| Wash | Dark rinse, mid blue, light stone wash, black | What the photo cannot show in every light |
| Condition (vintage) | Light fading on thighs, small repair at hem | Stops a return before it starts |
| Care | Wash cold inside out, hang dry | Protects the colour and limits shrinkage |
Measure the way you describe it. If you say “measured flat”, lay the jeans flat, button them, and measure straight across. Then say whether you doubled the waist figure or not, because buyers read it both ways.
A jeans description template you can fill in
This structure works for new, vintage and handmade denim on Etsy and Shopify:
[Cut] jeans in [wash], [one line on style or era].
[One or two sentences on how they look and feel on.]
Fit: [Rise.] [Fit through hip and thigh.] [Size advice.]
Measurements: Waist [x] in, front rise [x] in, inseam [x] in, leg opening [x] in. Measured flat.
Fabric: [Composition.] [Stretch or rigid.] [Weight.]
Details: [Button or zip fly.] [Pockets.] [Hem: raw, original, cuffed.]
Condition: [New with tags, or the honest wear notes.]
Care: [Wash and dry instructions.]
Keep the bold labels. Denim buyers jump straight to “Measurements”, so make it easy to find.
Six denim jeans description examples
Each example starts from a full set of notes. Keep the structure and replace the facts with your own.
1. High rise mom jeans
High rise mom jeans in a light vintage wash, relaxed through the hip with a tapered ankle.
A roomy, easy fit that sits at the natural waist and looks good with a tucked tee.
Fit: High rise. Relaxed through hip and thigh, tapered below the knee. Rigid denim, so take your usual size or size up for a looser look.
Measurements: Waist 27 in, front rise 12 in, inseam 28 in, leg opening 6 in. Measured flat, waist doubled.
Fabric: 100% cotton, rigid, midweight.
Care: Wash cold inside out, hang dry.
What makes it work: it says the denim is rigid and gives size advice because of it. Rigid mom jeans run smaller than stretch ones in the same size.
2. Stretch skinny jeans
Mid rise skinny jeans in a dark indigo wash, with enough stretch to move in all day.
A close fit from hip to ankle that keeps its shape after a full day of wear.
Fit: Mid rise, skinny through the leg. Stretch denim, so take your usual size.
Measurements (size 28): Waist 28 in, front rise 9.5 in, inseam 30 in, leg opening 5 in.
Fabric: Cotton with elastane, stretch, lightweight.
Care: Wash cold, do not tumble dry, to protect the stretch.
What makes it work: it names the elastane and connects the care line to it. Heat is what wears stretch out first.
3. Bootcut jeans
Classic bootcut jeans in a mid blue wash, fitted through the thigh with a gentle flare from the knee.
Made to sit over boots or heels, with a long inseam so the hem reaches the floor.
Fit: Mid rise. Fitted through hip and thigh, flared from the knee. Light stretch.
Measurements (size 30): Waist 30 in, front rise 10 in, inseam 32 in, leg opening 9 in.
Fabric: Cotton with a little elastane, midweight.
Details: Zip fly, five pockets, original hem.
Care: Wash cold inside out.
What makes it work: the leg opening figure is the proof of the bootcut. A buyer comparing it with a straight leg can see the difference in one number.
4. Boyfriend jeans
Boyfriend jeans in a light wash with ripped knees and rolled cuffs, cut loose and borrowed-looking.
A relaxed, slouchy fit that sits a little lower on the hip.
Fit: Mid rise, relaxed and straight through the leg. Size down one if you want them less slouchy.
Measurements (size 8): Waist 30 in, front rise 10.5 in, inseam 27 in rolled, 29 in unrolled.
Fabric: 100% cotton, rigid, midweight.
Details: Distressed knees, button fly, cuffs rolled once.
Care: Wash cold, hang dry. The distressing will open a little with wear.
What makes it work: it gives the inseam both rolled and unrolled, and warns that the distressing will grow. A buyer who expected neither would return the pair.
5. Vintage straight leg jeans
Vintage straight leg jeans in a faded medium wash, button fly, with real wear from years of use.
Soft, broken-in denim with honest fading along the thighs and seams.
Fit: High rise, straight leg. Vintage sizing runs small, so go by the measurements, not the tag.
Measurements: Tag size 31, measures waist 29 in flat doubled, front rise 11.5 in, inseam 30 in, leg opening 7.5 in.
Fabric: 100% cotton, rigid.
Condition: Good vintage condition. Light fading on thighs, small repaired hole by the back pocket (pictured), original hem.
Care: Wash cold, hang dry.
What makes it work: it tells the buyer to ignore the tag and names every flaw that is in the photos. On vintage, an unmentioned flaw is the fastest route to a dispute.
6. Handmade raw denim jeans
Handmade raw denim jeans in a deep indigo, cut straight and sewn to order in your measurements.
Unwashed denim that starts stiff and fades to your own wear pattern over months.
Fit: Straight leg, mid rise. Made to your waist and inseam, chosen at checkout.
Fabric: 100% cotton raw denim, heavyweight, unwashed.
Details: Button fly, chain stitched hem, copper rivets.
Care: Wear for months before the first wash. Expect a little shrinkage on the first soak, and some indigo transfer to light fabrics and furniture at first.
Good to know: Made to order. Please allow time for sewing before dispatch.
What makes it work: it warns about shrinkage and indigo transfer. Raw denim buyers expect both, and a newcomer who is not told will think the jeans are faulty.

Jeans cuts and the line buyers check first
| Cut | The line buyers look for | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Skinny | Stretch, and whether it bags out | No fabric composition |
| Straight leg | Leg opening | Calling a tapered leg “straight” |
| Bootcut | Leg opening and inseam | Inseam too short for boots |
| Mom | Rise and how rigid it is | Size advice copied from stretch jeans |
| Boyfriend | Rolled and unrolled inseam | One inseam figure only |
| Wide leg | Leg opening and length | No word on hemming |
| Vintage | Measured waist against tag size | Quoting the tag size alone |
Mistakes that cause jeans returns
Most denim returns come from a fit the description never measured. The usual ones:
- A size with no measurements. Give the waist, rise and inseam, and say how you measured.
- Stretch left unsaid. A rigid pair and a stretch pair in the same size fit differently. Name the elastane or say “rigid”.
- “Vintage wash” with nothing else. Say light, mid or dark, and show the jeans in daylight.
- Hidden flaws on vintage. Every repair, stain or fade that a buyer will notice belongs in the text and the photos.
- Claims you cannot back. “Won’t shrink”, “organic cotton” or “selvedge” need the label or the mill behind them.
Getting found: jeans titles and tags
On Etsy the description persuades, while the title and tags get the listing found. Lead the title with the cut, the rise and the wash, in the words a shopper would type: “High Waisted Mom Jeans, Light Wash Vintage Denim, Size 27” beats a brand name nobody searches for. Shoppers say “high waisted” and “high rise” interchangeably, so one tag can carry the phrase your title does not. The rules for filling every slot are in how to use all 13 Etsy tags, and titles are covered in how to write an Etsy title.
The faster way when you list many pairs
The template is quick for one pair. It slows down when you list forty vintage pairs a week, because the structure never changes while every measurement, wash and flaw does, and copying the last description is how a wrong inseam ends up on the next listing.
Here is how to write jeans descriptions from notes in one pass, using ListingBrief AI as one way to do it:
- Write the notes as you measure, in shorthand: “high rise mom, light vintage wash, rigid 100% cotton midweight, waist 27 flat doubled, rise 12, inseam 28, opening 6, light fade thighs, wash cold hang dry”.
- Paste them into the free Shopify description generator, which needs no account and returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
- Pick a tone. Simple suits a vintage reseller listing many pairs, premium suits raw denim, handmade suits a small sewing shop, and playful and a default tone are there too.
- Check every figure against your notes, measurements and condition first.
- For Etsy, use the ListingBrief AI dashboard to get the title, all 13 tags and the description from the same notes.
ListingBrief AI writes from the notes you give it, so it only knows what you tell it. Leave out the inseam and the draft has no inseam to state. Read every draft before you publish, because the listing carries your shop name.
When writing by hand is enough
You may not need a generator if:
- You list a few pairs a month. The template takes minutes, and you know each pair.
- The pair has a story. A rare vintage find deserves your own words about where it came from.
- It is made to measure. The details come from the customer, so the description is short and the conversation is long.
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A weekly vintage haul of 30 pairs | Generator | Notes are quick to type, the structure stays the same |
| One cut in six washes | Generator | Same facts, distinct wording per listing |
| A rare collector’s pair | By hand | The history is what the buyer pays for |
| A made-to-measure order | By hand | Every figure comes from the buyer |
When you are ready, measure one pair, paste its notes into the free description generator, and check the draft against the checklist at the top of this page. If it passes, the rest of the rail will go the same way.
