Jewelry Description Generator: What to Feed It, How to Check It
October 8, 2026
A jewelry description generator turns your notes about a ring, necklace or pair of earrings into a product description you can paste into Etsy or Shopify. It does a good job when your notes carry the facts a photo cannot show: the metal, the stone, the size and how to care for the piece. It does a poor job when you type “pretty silver necklace” and hope, because then it writes vague sparkle words or, worse, guesses at a metal or a size you never gave it. This guide covers what to feed one, how to check the draft, a template for writing it by hand, and when the manual way is the better choice.
The rule that matters most for jewelry: a generator must never claim a metal, a stone or a skin-safety property you did not state. “Sterling silver”, “solid gold”, “hypoallergenic” and “nickel-free” are promises a buyer can hold you to, and on Etsy a buyer who reacts to a clasp you called nickel-free will tell everyone in the review.
Why jewelry descriptions carry more risk than most
A tote bag can be described loosely and still sell. A ring cannot. Jewelry is small, the photos flatter it, and the buyer cannot pick it up, so the description does the work of a jeweller’s loupe and a ring sizer at once.
The questions a jewelry buyer brings, roughly in the order they ask them:
- What is it made of, exactly? (Solid, plated, filled, vermeil, stainless.)
- How big is it? (Ring size, chain length, pendant width, earring drop.)
- Is the stone real, lab-grown or simulated?
- Will it tarnish, and will it irritate my skin?
- Is it a gift? Does it come boxed, and can it be personalised?
A good draft answers all five. A generator can only do that if your notes contain the answers.
What to feed a jewelry description generator
Treat the notes as the hallmark, the ruler and the care card, typed out. The more of these you include, the less you edit afterwards.
| Note | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Item and style | Dainty bar necklace, minimalist | Becomes the opening line and the core of the title |
| Metal, exactly | 925 sterling silver chain, 18k gold vermeil bar | Plated, filled and solid are different claims |
| Stone | Lab-grown sapphire, 4 mm round | “Real”, “natural” and “lab” are not interchangeable |
| Size | Chain 45 cm with 5 cm extender, bar 20 mm | The most common pre-sale question |
| Ring size system | US 7, UK N | Sizes differ between countries |
| Closure | Spring ring clasp | Matters to buyers with limited dexterity |
| Care | Store dry, remove before swimming | Answers the tarnish question honestly |
| Skin notes | Only what you can back up | Never let the tool add this for you |
| Gift details | Arrives in a kraft box, can engrave 3 initials | Gives the draft a reason to buy |
You do not need full sentences. “bar necklace, minimalist, 925 silver chain, 18k gold vermeil bar 20mm, chain 45cm + 5cm extender, spring ring clasp, engrave up to 3 initials, gift box, store dry” is enough for a decent generator to work from.
Anything about metal or stones you did not type should not appear in the draft. If it does, delete it, because the tool made it up.
How to use one, step by step
Here is the whole job with ListingBrief AI’s free tool as the example. Most generators follow roughly the same shape.
- Measure the piece. Chain length end to end with the clasp closed, pendant or bar width, earring drop from the top of the hook, ring size on a mandrel. Write each number down with its unit.
- Check your supplier’s spec sheet for the metal and stone. Copy the exact wording: “gold filled” and “gold plated” are different products, and so are “lab-grown” and “simulated”.
- Open the generator and paste your notes. On the free Shopify description generator you can do this without an account; it returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
- Pick a tone. Fine jewelry suits a premium voice that leans on materials and finish rather than adjectives. A hand-stamped name bracelet suits a handmade or playful one. ListingBrief AI offers simple, premium, handmade and playful tones next to the default.
- Check the draft line by line against your notes, using the checklist below.
- Paste it into the listing, then add your ring size chart or chain length guide in the format your shop already uses.
For an Etsy listing, the same notes on the ListingBrief AI dashboard give you a title, all 13 tags and the description in one go. That saves retyping the metal and size three times when you list a whole collection of earrings in different stones.
ListingBrief AI’s writing instructions tell it not to assert certifications or skin-safety claims such as “hypoallergenic” unless your notes state them. That is a useful default. It is not a reason to skip the check below, because it is your shop name on the listing.
How to check a generated jewelry description
Run every draft through these checks before it goes live.
- The metal is named exactly as your supplier names it. Sterling silver, 14k gold filled, 18k gold vermeil, gold plated brass, 316L stainless steel. A draft that turns “gold plated” into “gold” has made a claim you cannot keep.
- The stone is described honestly. Natural, lab-grown, simulated, glass or crystal. If you are unsure of the stone, say what you know (“clear faceted stone”) rather than letting the draft guess.
- Every size matches your notes. Chain length, pendant size, ring size and its system. A number you did not provide comes out.
- Skin-safety claims are yours, or absent. “Hypoallergenic”, “nickel-free” and “tarnish-free” stay only if you can back them up.
- Care advice fits the metal. Plated pieces need gentler care than solid ones, and a draft that says “wear it in the shower” about vermeil sets up a disappointed buyer.
- No filler. “Timeless elegance”, “a must-have for every jewelry lover” and “sparkle like never before” add length and nothing a buyer can act on. Cut them.
If you find yourself fixing more than two lines, your notes were too thin. Add the missing facts and generate again. That is faster than rewriting.
A jewelry description template you can fill by hand
If you would rather write it yourself, or you want to know what a good draft should look like, this structure works for most rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings on Etsy and Shopify:
[Item] in [metal], [one-line reason to want it].
[Two sentences on style, how it sits and what to wear it with.]
Materials: [Exact metal and finish]. [Stone, and whether natural, lab-grown or simulated.]
Size: [Chain length, pendant size, ring size and system, earring drop.]
Care: [Storage and what to avoid.]
Gift details: [Packaging, personalisation, processing time.]
Filled in, it reads like this:
Dainty bar necklace in sterling silver and gold vermeil, made to wear every day.
A slim engraved bar on a fine cable chain that sits just below the collarbone. Layer it with a longer chain or wear it alone with an open collar.
Materials: 925 sterling silver chain. Bar in 18k gold vermeil over sterling silver.
Size: Chain 45 cm with a 5 cm extender. Bar 20 mm by 4 mm.
Care: Store dry in the pouch provided. Remove before swimming or showering to protect the vermeil.
Gift details: Engraved with up to 3 initials. Arrives in a kraft gift box.
For the general shape of a description, see how to write Etsy product descriptions and the six before-and-after description rewrites.
Rings, necklaces and earrings: what each needs most
The template covers every piece, but each type has one line buyers look for first.
| Piece | The line buyers look for | Common mistake in drafts |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | Size and size system, band width | A size with no country system |
| Necklace | Chain length and where it sits | Length without the extender noted |
| Earrings | Drop length and hook or post metal | Naming the charm metal but not the hook |
| Bracelet | Inner circumference or adjustable range | “One size fits most” with no number |
| Personalised piece | What can be engraved and how many characters | Promising any text in any font |
Generator or by hand: which suits your shop
| Situation | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A collection of the same design in 8 stones | Generator | Keeps descriptions distinct without rewriting each |
| One-of-a-kind vintage or estate piece | By hand | Condition and provenance need your own words |
| A new line of 20 to 50 pieces | Generator | Same structure every time, notes are fast to type |
| A signature piece with a story behind it | By hand | Your voice is part of what the buyer pays for |
| Variants in several metals | Generator for the copy, a materials table by hand | One description, one clear table |
When the manual way is enough
A generator is a shortcut for volume. You may not need it if:
- You list a handful of pieces a month. Filling the template above by hand is manageable, and you know every piece by heart.
- Your brand voice is the product. If buyers come for the way you write about your work, keep writing it.
- The piece is one of a kind. A ring made from a customer’s heirloom stone deserves a description nobody else could have written.
In those cases, use the template and the checklist, and skip the tool.
Getting the rest of the listing right
A strong description does little if nobody finds the listing. On Etsy the title and tags carry the search work: see how to write an Etsy title, how to use all 13 Etsy tags and the full tag sets for six kinds of product. If you sell clothing alongside jewelry, the clothing description generator guide covers the measurements and fabric notes that category needs.
When you are ready to try it, paste one piece’s notes into the free description generator and compare the draft against the checklist above. If it passes, the rest of the collection will go the same way.
