Mug Product Description: Examples, a Template and What to Include

A good mug product description tells the buyer four things a photo cannot: how much it holds, what it is made of, how the design was applied, and whether it can go in the dishwasher and microwave. Add who it suits as a gift and you have most of what a mug buyer asks before they buy. This guide gives you the checklist, a fill-in template, five worked examples for different kinds of mug, a full Etsy tag set, and a faster way to write descriptions when you list a whole range.

The rule that matters most for mugs: never state a capacity, a material or a safety claim you have not checked. “Dishwasher safe”, “microwave safe”, “lead-free” and “food safe” are promises a buyer acts on. They come from your glaze supplier, your blank supplier or your own testing.

What a mug buyer wants to know first

Mugs are an everyday object, so buyers compare them quickly. In rough order, the questions they bring are:

  1. How big is it? Capacity in oz or ml, and ideally height and width.
  2. What is it made of? Stoneware, porcelain, ceramic, enamel, stainless steel, glass.
  3. How was the design made? Hand-glazed, hand-painted, sublimation printed, vinyl, engraved.
  4. How do I wash it? Dishwasher and microwave, or hand wash only.
  5. Is it a good gift? Packaging, personalisation, who it is for.

A description that answers all five rarely gets a “how big is it?” message. One that answers two gets those messages, and some buyers never send one. They just leave.

What to include in a mug product description

Treat this as the list of notes to have ready before you write a word.

Detail Example Why it matters
Item and style Speckled stoneware coffee mug Your opening line and the core of the title
Capacity 12 oz / 350 ml The most asked question on mug listings
Dimensions 9 cm tall, 8.5 cm wide Helps buyers check a coffee machine or shelf
Material Stoneware, porcelain, enamel, stainless steel Each one is a different weight, feel and care routine
Design method Hand-glazed, sublimation print, engraved Tells the buyer how long the design will last
Care Dishwasher and microwave safe, or hand wash A wrong answer here is a refund
Safety Food-safe glaze, lead-free Only with your supplier’s documents behind it
Variation Each piece differs slightly in glaze Sets expectations before the parcel arrives
Gift details Gift box, personalised name, processing time Gives the buyer a reason to choose you

Metal accents change the care line. A gold or platinum lustre rim usually rules out the microwave, and many printed mugs last longer washed by hand. Write the care line for the mug you actually made, not the generic one.

A mug description template you can fill in

This structure works for most handmade, printed and personalised mugs on Etsy and Shopify:

[What it is], [the one thing that makes it worth choosing].

[One or two sentences on the design, the feel and where it gets used.]

Size: [Capacity.] [Height and width.]

Made from: [Material.] [How the design was applied.]

Care: [Dishwasher and microwave, or hand wash.]

Good to know: [Variation between pieces, personalisation, packaging, processing time.]

Keep the care line short. One sentence is enough, and buyers look for it rather than read around it.

Five mug product description examples

Each example below is written from a full set of notes. Swap in your own facts: the structure is what carries over.

1. Handmade stoneware mug

Speckled blue stoneware mug, thrown by hand and glazed in small batches.

A heavy, comfortable mug with a wide handle that fits three fingers. The glaze breaks lighter where it thins over the rim.

Size: Holds 12 oz. About 9 cm tall.

Made from: Stoneware with a food-safe glaze.

Care: Dishwasher and microwave safe.

Good to know: Each mug is made by hand, so the speckle and shade vary a little from the photos.

What makes it work: the variation line. It is the cheapest sentence in the listing and it heads off the most common complaint about handmade ceramics.

2. Sublimation printed mug

White ceramic mug with a hand-drawn sunflower pattern, printed all the way round.

Bright enough for a kitchen that needs cheering up, and a safe gift for anyone who likes flowers.

Size: 11 oz. Standard mug height.

Made from: White ceramic, sublimation printed so the design sits under a gloss coating.

Care: Dishwasher safe. Hand washing keeps the colours bright for longer.

Good to know: Printed to order and shipped in a padded box.

What makes it work: it says how the design was applied. A buyer who has had a vinyl decal peel off wants to know.

3. Personalised name mug

Personalised name mug, with any name up to 12 letters in a script font.

A gift that takes a minute to order and gets used every morning. Add the name in the personalisation box.

Size: 11 oz ceramic mug.

Made from: White ceramic with the name printed on both sides, so it reads for left and right hands.

Care: Dishwasher and microwave safe.

Good to know: Please check spelling before you order. We print exactly what you type.

What makes it work: it states the character limit and the printing side, which are the two things personalisation buyers message about.

4. Enamel camping mug

Enamel camping mug with a mountain line drawing, light enough for a daypack.

For coffee at the trailhead and tea in the tent. The rolled steel rim stays cooler than the body.

Size: 12 oz. 8 cm tall.

Made from: Enamel-coated steel.

Care: Hand wash. Not for the microwave.

Good to know: Enamel can chip if dropped on rock, which most campers consider part of the look.

What makes it work: the “not for the microwave” line. Enamel mugs are steel underneath, so the care line protects the buyer and you.

5. Insulated travel mug

Insulated travel mug with a slide lid, sized for most car cup holders.

Double-walled stainless steel with an engraved wave design that will not rub off.

Size: 16 oz. Base fits standard cup holders.

Made from: Stainless steel, laser engraved.

Care: Hand wash the body. The lid is top-rack dishwasher safe.

Good to know: Keeps drinks hot for a commute. We have not tested it as leak-proof, so keep it upright in a bag.

What makes it work: it separates the body and the lid in the care line, and it says plainly what has not been tested rather than implying it.

Mug types and the line buyers check first

Mug type The line buyers look for Common mistake
Handmade stoneware Variation between pieces Promising it matches the photo exactly
Sublimation or printed How the design was applied Claiming dishwasher safe without testing the print
Personalised Character limit and font No word on what happens with a typo
Gold or lustre rim Microwave warning Leaving the standard care line in
Enamel camping Hand wash, no microwave Calling it ceramic
Travel mug Lid, cup holder fit, leak claims Saying “leak-proof” without testing it

A 13-tag set for an Etsy mug listing

On Etsy, the description persuades and the title and tags get the listing found. Here is a full set for the speckled stoneware mug in example 1, each tag inside Etsy’s 20-character limit:

# Tag Angle
1 stoneware mug What it is
2 handmade mug How it was made
3 speckled mug Look
4 blue coffee mug Colour and use
5 pottery mug Category buyers search
6 ceramic coffee cup Synonym
7 12 oz mug Size
8 tea mug Second use
9 rustic mug Style
10 coffee lover gift Recipient
11 housewarming gift Occasion
12 gift for potter fan Niche recipient
13 kitchen decor Room

Notice what is missing: no “lead free mug” tag, because a tag is a claim too. The rules behind the set are in how to use all 13 Etsy tags, and there are more full sets in Etsy tags examples.

The faster way when you list many mugs

The template is quick for one mug. It gets slow when you sell the same blank in 30 designs, or one design in three sizes, because the facts barely change and the wording has to.

Here is how to write a mug description from notes in one pass, using ListingBrief AI as one way to do it:

  1. Write the notes once, in shorthand: “white ceramic mug, sunflower all-over print, 11oz, sublimation, dishwasher safe, printed to order, padded box”.
  2. Paste them into the free Shopify description generator, which needs no account and returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
  3. Pick a tone. Handmade suits a pottery shop, playful suits a funny-quote mug, premium suits a gift line. Simple and a default tone are there too.
  4. Check every fact against your notes. Capacity, material and care line first.
  5. For Etsy, use the ListingBrief AI dashboard to get the title, all 13 tags and the description from the same notes.

ListingBrief AI writes from your notes and is told not to state a capacity, a material or a health claim you did not give it. A claim like “lead-free” is removed from the draft unless your notes contain it, and the validation panel shows you what was taken out. If the claim is true, add it to your notes and generate again. Still read the draft, because the listing carries your shop name.

When writing by hand is enough

You may not need a generator if:

Situation Better choice Why
One design on three mug sizes Generator Same facts, distinct wording per listing
A seasonal drop of 20 printed designs Generator Notes are fast to type, structure stays consistent
A signature glaze with a story By hand The story is what the buyer pays for
A custom commission By hand The details are a conversation

Getting the rest of the listing right

The description is one field of three on Etsy. The title does most of the search work: see how to write an Etsy title and the before-and-after title examples. If you sell candles beside your mugs, the candle description guide covers what that category needs, and the product description template has fill-in versions for other products.

When you are ready, paste one mug’s notes into the free description generator and check the draft against the list at the top of this page. If it passes, the rest of the range will go the same way.
