Ring Description Examples: Six to Copy, by Ring Type
October 16, 2026
A good ring description tells the buyer three things before anything else: what the ring is made of, what size it is (or how they choose one), and what the stone really is. Below are six ring description examples you can copy and adapt, one for each common kind of ring listing (engagement, stacking, signet, gemstone, men’s band and adjustable), followed by a fill-in template, the mistakes that cause returns, and a quicker way to write them when you list a whole collection.
A ring is the one piece of jewelry a buyer cannot guess the fit of. A necklace that is a little long still gets worn. A ring that is half a size too small goes back in the post. So every example below names the size system, the band width and how resizing works, because those are the lines that prevent the “will this fit me?” message.
What every ring description needs
The photos already show the colour and the style. The description has to carry the facts a photo cannot.
| Fact | Why it matters | Weak version | Strong version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size and system | US, UK and EU sizes differ | “Made to order” | “US sizes 4 to 10, including half sizes” |
| Band width | A wide band fits tighter than a thin one | Not mentioned | “2mm band, tapering to 1.5mm at the back” |
| Metal | Skin sensitivity and price both depend on it | “Silver tone” | “Solid 925 sterling silver, nickel free” |
| Stone | Buyers need to know natural, lab-grown or simulated | “Diamond look” | “5mm round lab-grown sapphire” |
| Setting | Decides how the ring sits and snags | Not mentioned | “Low four-prong setting, sits close to the finger” |
| Resizing | Answers the next question before it is asked | Not mentioned | “One free resize, size up or down” |
Name the size system every time. “Size 7” means a different ring in the US and the UK, and international buyers are exactly the ones who will not message to check.
Ring description examples by type
Each example is written for a real kind of listing. Swap in your own measurements, metals and policies; never copy a number or a promise that does not match your shop.
1. Engagement ring description
A solitaire engagement ring in solid 14k yellow gold, set with a 6mm round lab-grown diamond in a low six-prong setting. The band is 1.8mm wide and tapers slightly toward the back, so the stone stays the focus.
Size: made to order in US sizes 3 to 10, including half and quarter sizes. Not sure of her size? Choose “size later” and I will send a free plastic ring sizer before the ring is made.
The stone is lab grown, chemically and optically a diamond, and comes with a grading report from the lab. Ships insured in a wooden ring box.
Why it works: the most expensive question, natural or lab grown, is answered in the first sentence. The sizing line solves the classic surprise-proposal problem without the buyer having to message you.
2. Stacking ring description
A thin hammered stacking ring in solid 925 sterling silver, 1.3mm wide. The hammered texture catches the light differently from a plain band, so it looks good alone or stacked with two or three others.
Size: choose your US size from the menu. Thin bands fit loosely, so if you are between sizes, choose the smaller one.
Sterling silver darkens over time. Rub it with the polishing cloth included in your order to bring the shine back.
Why it works: it gives the width in millimetres, which is what a stacker compares, and the between-sizes advice is specific to a thin band. Generic sizing advice would be wrong here.
3. Signet ring description
A personalised oval signet ring in solid sterling silver, with a 12 x 10mm face hand engraved with up to three initials in a classic script. The band is 3mm wide at the back, weighty enough for everyday wear.
How to order: type your initials in the personalisation box in the order you want them, left to right. I will email a proof of the layout before engraving.
Size: US 4 to 13. Signet rings are heavier than most bands, so if you usually wear a thin ring, consider going up a quarter size.
Why it works: the face size and the engraving limit are numbers, the proof step removes the buyer’s fear of a wrong letter, and the sizing note is honest about how a heavy ring feels.
4. Gemstone ring description
A dainty birthstone ring with a 4mm round natural amethyst set in a bezel of 14k gold filled wire, on a 1.2mm gold filled band. Natural amethyst varies from pale lilac to deep purple, so your stone will be a little different from the photo.
Size: US 5 to 9, made to order. Every ring is shaped on a steel mandrel to your exact size.
Care: remove before swimming, cleaning or applying lotion. Gold filled jewelry is suitable for daily wear and will not flake like plating.
Why it works: “natural” is stated, the colour variation is stated before a buyer can be disappointed by it, and the difference between gold filled and plated is explained in a single sentence.
5. Men’s wedding band description
A men’s wedding band in brushed titanium, 6mm wide with a comfort-fit interior that is rounded on the inside so it slides over the knuckle easily. Titanium is light, strong and hypoallergenic.
Size: US 8 to 14, including half sizes. Comfort-fit bands can feel looser than a flat band of the same size, so check your size with a comfort-fit sizer if you can.
Please note: titanium rings cannot be resized after they are made. If the size is wrong, I will exchange it once for the right size.
Why it works: it names the material’s one real drawback (no resizing) and gives the remedy in the same place. Saying it up front turns a future complaint into a policy the buyer agreed to.
6. Adjustable ring description
An adjustable open ring in solid sterling silver with a small hand-cut moon at one end and a star at the other. The band is open at the front, so it adjusts to fit US sizes 5 to 9.
To adjust: gently press the ends closer together or ease them apart, a little at a time. Bending it back and forth many times will weaken the silver, so set your size once.
Arrives in a gift box with a polishing cloth, ready to give.
Why it works: “adjustable” alone is vague. The description gives the size range it covers and how to adjust it without breaking it, and it says the ring is gift ready, which is what most adjustable ring buyers are shopping for.
A ring description template you can fill in
If none of the six fits your piece, this structure covers almost any ring listing:
- First sentence: type, metal and the stone or detail that defines it. “A [type] ring in [metal], with [stone and size, or standout detail].”
- Band line: width in millimetres and the profile if it matters (flat, domed, comfort fit, tapered).
- Size line: the size system and range, half sizes, and what to do between sizes. “Size: US [x] to [y], half sizes available. If you are between sizes, choose [the smaller or larger].”
- Stone line: natural, lab grown or simulated, and any variation the buyer should expect.
- Resizing or exchange line: what you do if the size is wrong, in one sentence.
- Care and gift line: one care instruction for the metal, plus the packaging.
The general jewelry version of this template, covering necklaces and earrings too, is in our jewelry description generator guide. For a matching bracelet listing, see our bracelet description examples.
Common mistakes in ring descriptions
- A size with no system. Write “US 7” or “UK N”, never just “7”.
- Leaving out the band width. A 6mm band and a 2mm band in the same size do not fit the same finger.
- Implying a stone it is not. “Diamond look” next to a cubic zirconia invites a “not as described” case. Name the stone exactly: natural, lab grown or simulated.
- Hiding the plating. If the ring is gold plated brass, say so. Buyers who find out from a green finger leave the reviews you least want.
- No resizing policy. Buyers will ask. Answer it in the listing and they will not need to.
- Opening with adjectives. “Stunning and elegant” says nothing a photo has not already shown. Lead with the type, the metal and the stone.
Writing ring descriptions faster, or for a whole collection
If you list a new ring now and then, the template above is all you need. If you sell the same band in five metals and three widths, or a birthstone ring in twelve stones, writing each description from scratch is where the evening goes. That is the job a listing generator can take on.
ListingBrief AI works from the notes you already have. You type something like “stacking ring, hammered, 925 sterling, 1.3mm band, US 4 to 10, polishing cloth included” and it writes an Etsy title inside the 140-character limit, all 13 tags and a description, plus the Shopify fields if you sell there too. You can pick a tone (default, simple, premium, handmade or playful), so an engagement ring can read differently from a playful moon-and-star ring. New accounts get 5 free generations a day.
Check every draft against the ring in front of you before you publish. A generator only knows what your notes tell it, so put the size range, the band width, the metal and the stone in your notes, then read the description to confirm each one came through as you wrote it. A number you did not give it should not be in the draft. For the tags, our jewelry tag sets show what a full 13-tag set looks like.
When writing by hand is enough
You do not need a tool at all if:
- you make a few one-of-a-kind rings and enjoy writing the story behind each stone;
- your rings differ only by size or stone, so one strong description with a changed stone line covers them all;
- your shop voice is so particular that you would rewrite any draft anyway.
In those cases, keep the template, keep the size and resizing lines, and spend the time on close-up photos of the setting instead.
Getting the rest of the ring listing right
The description is what a buyer reads after they have already clicked. The title and tags decide whether they find the listing at all, so pair these examples with our Etsy title examples and the wider set of Etsy description examples. Name the size system, the metal and the stone honestly, and the ring description will do its job.
