Shoe Description Examples: How to Describe Shoes That Fit and Sell
October 21, 2026
A good shoe description answers the one question a photo never can: will these fit my feet, and will they be comfortable for what I plan to do in them. So the best shoe description examples all follow the same order. One line on what the shoe is and where it gets worn, then fit and sizing advice, then the upper, the lining, the sole and the heel, then care. Below you will find the checklist, a fill-in template, six shoe description examples for sneakers, boots, sandals, heels, handmade leather shoes and kids’ shoes, the mistakes that cause returns, and a faster way to write them when you list a whole range.
The rule that matters most for shoes: say how they run. “True to size” is the most useful sentence in a shoe listing, and “runs half a size small, size up” is even more useful when it is true. Fit is the reason most shoes come back.
What a shoe buyer wants to know first
Shoe buyers read differently from clothing buyers. They have usually seen the style already and are checking whether this pair is right for their feet. Their questions, roughly in order:
- How does it fit? True to size, narrow, wide, roomy in the toe.
- What is it made of? Full grain leather, suede, canvas, knit, vegan leather.
- What is the sole like? Rubber, crepe, leather, cushioned foam, grip.
- How high is the heel? In centimetres or inches, measured the same way every time.
- Is it comfortable all day? Padded insole, arch support, removable footbed.
- How do I care for it? Leather and suede need different treatment.
Fit and sole decide whether a buyer keeps the pair. Answer both before they scroll.
What to include in a shoe product description
Gather these notes before you write. Most come from your maker’s spec sheet or from measuring one pair yourself:
| Detail | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Style and use | Low top canvas sneaker for everyday wear | Opening line and core of the title |
| Fit | True to size; wide feet size up half | The most common reason for a return |
| Upper | Full grain leather, suede, canvas, knit | Look, break in and care all follow from it |
| Lining | Leather lined, textile, unlined | Comfort and breathability |
| Insole | Padded, removable, arch support | The honest answer to “all day comfort” |
| Sole | Natural rubber, crepe, stacked leather | Grip, weight and how long it lasts |
| Heel height | 3 cm, measured at the back | Buyers compare this number across listings |
| Closure | Laces, buckle, zip, slip on | Matters to anyone dressing a child or with limited reach |
| Sizes | EU 36 to 42, with a conversion chart | Say which size system you use |
| Care | Brush suede dry; condition leather monthly | Protects the pair and your reviews |
| Processing | Made to order, ships in 2 to 3 weeks | Handmade shoes take time; say how long |
Measure rather than guess. If you sell handmade or vintage shoes, measure the insole length and the widest point of one pair and put both numbers in the listing. Those two figures answer more sizing questions than any chart.
A shoe description template you can fill in
This structure works for sneakers, boots, sandals and dress shoes on Etsy and Shopify:
[What the shoe is], [where or how it gets worn].
[One or two sentences on the look and the feel underfoot.]
Fit: [True to size, or how it runs.] [Advice for wide or narrow feet.] [Insole length per size.]
Materials: [Upper.] [Lining.] [Insole.]
Sole and heel: [Sole material and grip.] [Heel height.]
Details: [Closure.] [Toe shape.] [Anything handmade or special.]
Care: [How to clean and protect it.]
Good to know: [Processing time, returns, sizing help.]
Keep the bold labels. A buyer on a phone jumps straight to “Fit”, so make that word easy to find.

Care: Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not machine wash.
Mistakes that send shoes back
- No fit guidance. A size number alone is not fit information. Say how the shoe runs.
- Heel height without a method. Measure at the back of the heel, and use the same method on every listing.
- “Genuine leather” with no detail. Say which part is leather: the upper, the lining, the sole, or all three.
- “All day comfort” with nothing to back it. Name the padded insole or the arch support instead. If you have neither, leave the phrase out.
- Mixed size systems. If you list EU sizes, say so, and give a conversion chart in the photos.
- Care missing for suede. Suede buyers want to know how to protect it before the first rain.
For the same checklist applied to other wardrobe items, see the guides to hoodie descriptions and bag descriptions. Every shoe listing also needs a strong first line in the title, so the Etsy title examples are worth a look.
The faster way when you list many shoes
The template is quick for one pair. It slows down when you sell one style in eight colours, or a range of sandals that share a sole, a fit note and a care line. The facts barely change, the opening line has to change every time, and copying the same paragraph across a shop reads like filler.
Here is how to write shoe descriptions from notes in one pass, using ListingBrief AI as one way to do it:
- Write the notes once, in shorthand: “chelsea boot dark brown full grain leather, runs narrow size up half for wide feet, leather lined, rubber sole 4 cm stacked heel, elastic sides, condition leather”.
- Paste them into the free Shopify description generator, which needs no account and returns a description plus an SEO page title and meta description.
- Pick a tone. Premium suits handmade leather, playful suits kids’ shoes, handmade suits a small workshop. Simple and a default tone are there too.
- Check every fact against your notes, fit and heel height first.
- For Etsy, use the ListingBrief AI dashboard to get the title, all 13 tags and the description from the same notes.
ListingBrief AI writes from the notes you give it, so it only knows what you tell it. Leave out the fit note and the draft has no fit note. Read every draft before you publish, because the listing carries your shop name.
When writing by hand is enough
You may not need a generator if:
- You make a few pairs a month. The template takes minutes, and you know every pair.
- Each pair is one of a kind. Vintage and bespoke shoes deserve their own words and their own measurements.
- It is a custom order. The size and the details come from the customer.
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One sneaker in eight colours | Generator | Same facts, distinct wording per listing |
| A summer range of 15 sandals | Generator | Notes are quick to type, structure stays consistent |
| A single vintage pair | By hand | Measurements and condition are unique |
| Bespoke shoes made to measure | By hand | The details come from the customer |
When you are ready, paste one pair’s notes into the free description generator and check the draft against the checklist at the top of this page. If the fit line is right, the rest usually is too.
