Shopify Meta Description Examples: 12 You Can Adapt Today

A good Shopify meta description example names the product, gives the one or two facts a shopper checks first, and stays around 160 characters so the search snippet is not cut off. “Hand-thrown 6 inch ceramic planter with a drainage hole, glazed in speckled cream. Each one is thrown on the wheel, so no two are identical.” does all three. Below are twelve examples across product pages, collection pages and a store home page, the formula behind them, and the mistakes that make a snippet get ignored.

What a meta description does on Shopify

The meta description is the short paragraph that appears under your page’s link in search results. Shopify’s Help Center describes it, as of September 2026, as “the brief bit of text that is displayed in search engine results after the title tag”, and says it can be set for webpages, product pages, collection pages and blog posts.

Two things are worth knowing before you write one:

Shopify’s own guidance, as of September 2026, is to use about 160 characters, include relevant keywords, and use “natural, readable phrases, rather than lists of keywords”. It also asks for a unique description on each page. Past the limit, the description is shortened in search results.

Where to edit it in Shopify

For a product, open the product in your Shopify admin and scroll to the Search engine listing section at the bottom. Click Edit there and you will see the page title, the meta description and the URL handle. Collections and pages have the same section. The store home page is set separately, under Online Store > Preferences.

If you leave the field blank, the search engine has to improvise a snippet from whatever text it finds on the page, which is how a result ends up showing a shipping note or a size chart.

The formula behind every example

Every example below follows the same three-part pattern:

  1. What it is, in the words a shopper would search: “linen apron”, “soy candle”, “leather card wallet”.
  2. The deciding facts: the material, size, count, compatibility or scent that separates yours from the next result.
  3. One reason to choose it, stated as a fact rather than a slogan: made to order, ships in two days, refillable, machine washable.

Aim for 140 to 160 characters. Shorter is fine when the product is simple. Longer gets cut, and the cut usually lands on the part you most wanted read.

Shopify meta description examples for product pages

Here are eight product page examples, one per common Shopify category. Each is under 160 characters.

Product Meta description Characters
Ceramic planter Hand-thrown 6 inch ceramic planter with a drainage hole, glazed in speckled cream. Each one is thrown on the wheel, so no two are identical. 140
Soy candle Hand-poured 8 oz soy candle scented with fig and cedar. Cotton wick, about 45 hours of burn time, in a reusable amber glass jar. 128
Linen apron Stonewashed linen apron with two deep front pockets and adjustable cross-back straps. One size fits most, machine washable, in five colors. 139
Leather wallet Slim card wallet in full-grain vegetable-tanned leather. Holds six cards and folded notes, hand-stitched, and darkens with use. 127
Phone case Clear MagSafe-compatible case for iPhone 16 with raised edges around the camera. Wireless charging works through it. 116
Coffee beans Single-origin Ethiopian coffee beans, washed process, roasted light. Notes of jasmine and lemon. Roasted to order in 250 g bags. 128
Kids’ pajamas Organic cotton kids’ pajama set in sizes 2T to 10. Snug fit, tagless neck and flat seams, in a print of sleepy foxes. 117
Digital planner Undated digital planner PDF for GoodNotes and Notability. Hyperlinked monthly, weekly and daily pages in portrait layout. 121

Notice what they share. Each one starts with the search phrase, puts a number in where a number decides the purchase, and ends on a fact rather than “Shop now”. The planter reuses the facts from its product notes and nothing else. A meta description should never promise something the page does not say, because the reader who clicks on it checks.

Shopify meta description examples for collection pages

Collection pages often rank for the broader searches (“ceramic planters”, “linen aprons”) because they answer “show me options”. Their description should say what range the shopper will find.

Collection Meta description
Ceramic planters Handmade ceramic planters from 3 to 12 inches, all with drainage holes. Glazed and raw finishes for succulents, herbs and trailing plants.
Candles Hand-poured soy candles in 4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz jars. Woody, floral and citrus scents, all with cotton wicks and reusable glass.
Aprons Linen and cotton canvas aprons for cooks, potters and florists. Cross-back and neck-strap styles, all machine washable.

The pattern is the same, with the range replacing the single product: sizes, materials or styles the collection covers, then who it is for.

Meta description for a Shopify home page

The home page description speaks for the whole store, so it names what you sell and what makes the shop worth a visit:

Small-batch ceramics from a two-person studio in Oregon. Planters, mugs and serving bowls, thrown by hand and shipped in plastic-free packaging.

Keep the store name in the page title rather than spending description characters on it. The description is for the reason to click.

Mistakes that get a snippet ignored

These are the patterns to remove when you audit your catalog:

When writing them by hand is enough

For a store with a dozen products, write each description yourself. It takes a few minutes per product, and you know which facts your buyers ask about. Use the formula above, check the character count, and read the result aloud once. If it sounds like something you would say to a customer at a market stall, it is ready.

The manual approach starts to break down with a large catalog, a seasonal drop of new products, or a store where the meta description field was skipped from the start. The fields that go blank are always the same ones, and fixing them one product at a time is the job that keeps getting postponed.

A faster way for a large catalog

If you have many products to fill, drafting from your product notes is quicker than writing from a blank field.

ListingBrief drafts the Shopify product title, SEO title, meta description, description and tags from the notes you already have about each product. It keeps the meta description under 160 characters and writes it only from facts in your notes, so it will not invent a material or a size you did not give it. You can:

  1. Try it on one product with the free Shopify description generator, which returns a description plus an SEO title and meta description, with no account needed.
  2. Draft many products at once and export a CSV with the SEO description column filled, for Shopify’s product import.
  3. Fill the fields directly from the browser extension while the Shopify product editor is open.

Whichever way you draft, read each description before it goes live. You know the product, and a draft only knows what you told it.

For the other fields on the same page, Shopify SEO for Beginners covers the page title, URL handle and alt text in order, and How to Write a Shopify Product Description That Converts covers the body copy the meta description summarizes.
