Sticker Description: How to Describe Stickers, With a Template
October 19, 2026
A good sticker description tells a buyer what the sticker is made of, how big it is, how it is cut, what finish it has and where it will survive. Photos show the design. They cannot show whether the sticker is paper or vinyl, whether it is 2 inches or 4, whether it will peel off a water bottle after one wash, or whether it is one sticker or a sheet of twelve. This guide covers what to put in a sticker description, which durability claims to make only when they are true, a template you can fill by hand, worked examples for four common kinds of sticker, and how a description generator fits in when you list a whole collection at once.
The rule that matters most for stickers: state the material and the size in the first two lines. Most sticker returns and bad reviews come from a buyer who expected something bigger, thicker or tougher than what arrived. A sharp photo on a white background makes a 2 inch sticker look like a 4 inch one.
What a sticker description has to answer
A buyer looking at stickers usually has the same questions, roughly in this order:
- What is it made of? Paper, matte vinyl, glossy vinyl, holographic vinyl, clear vinyl.
- How big is it, measured on its longest side?
- How is it cut? Die cut to the shape of the design, kiss cut on a backing sheet, or a sheet of several designs.
- Where can it go? A laptop, a water bottle, a car window, a planner page.
- Will it survive water, sun and handling, and how do you know?
- How many do I get, and how is it shipped?
A description that answers all six rarely gets a message. One that answers only the design gets “is this waterproof?” in the inbox, which is a sale paused until you reply.
The claims to state only when they are true
Sticker listings carry a small set of durability words, and buyers read each one as a promise. A water bottle sticker that peels in the first week turns “waterproof” into a review.
| Claim | When you can make it | What to write if you cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof | Vinyl with a laminate, tested in water yourself | “Water resistant, wipe clean” |
| Dishwasher safe | You ran it through a dishwasher several times and it held | “Hand wash recommended” |
| Weatherproof or outdoor | Rated for outdoor use by your material supplier | “Best for indoor use” |
| UV resistant or fade resistant | Your laminate or ink is sold as UV resistant | Leave it out |
| Scratch resistant | Laminated, and you can say with what | “Glossy finish” |
| Removable or residue free | The adhesive is sold as removable | “Permanent adhesive” if it is |
| Holographic | The base vinyl itself is holographic | “Glitter laminate” or “shiny finish” if only the overlay is |
Lamination is the fact behind most of these claims. An unlaminated vinyl sticker printed on an inkjet can smear when wet even though the vinyl itself is waterproof. If you laminate, say so, because it is the reason the sticker lasts. If you do not, describe where it holds up instead of borrowing a word that belongs to a tougher product.
What to include, sticker by sticker
The same template covers most stickers, but each kind of product has one line buyers look for first.
| Product | The line buyers look for | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Die cut vinyl sticker | Size on the longest side, and the finish | Size missing, or only in a photo |
| Water bottle sticker | Whether it survives washing | “Waterproof” with no laminate |
| Sticker sheet | Sheet size, number of stickers, kiss cut or not | No count of stickers per sheet |
| Planner stickers | Which planner they fit, and the box sizes | No planner name or measurements |
| Holographic sticker | Whether the base or only the overlay shines | Calling a glitter overlay holographic |
| Car decal | Inside or outside the glass, and which way it reads | No mention of mounting side |
| Sticker pack | Exact designs and count, or how many are random | “Mystery pack” with no count |
| Digital stickers | File type, size in pixels, and the app they work in | Not saying nothing physical ships |
If you are also choosing tags for these listings, the Etsy tags for stickers guide has full 13-tag sets for vinyl, sheets, holographic, planner and digital stickers.
A sticker description template
Fill the brackets. Leave a line out rather than guess at it.
[Design name] [sticker type], [size] on the longest side, printed on [material] with a [finish] finish.
[One sentence on the design: what it shows, the mood, who it suits.]
Details
- Material: [matte, glossy, clear or holographic vinyl, or paper]
- Size: [width x height, in inches and centimetres]
- Cut: [die cut, kiss cut on a backing sheet, or a sheet of N]
- Finish: [laminated or not, and with what]
- Quantity: [1 sticker, a pack of N, or a sheet of N]
Where it holds up: [laptops and notebooks / water bottles, hand washed / indoor only]
Shipping: [flat in a rigid mailer, with a backing card / how fast it ships]
Two lines buyers often miss are worth keeping even when they feel obvious: the size in both units, and what “laminated” means for the place they want to stick it.
Four worked sticker description examples
Each example uses the template, trimmed to what that product needs. Change the facts to yours; do not copy a claim your sticker cannot back up.
A die cut vinyl sticker
Sleepy Frog die cut sticker, 3 inches on the longest side, printed on matte vinyl with a matte laminate.
A round green frog asleep on a mushroom, for anyone whose favourite hobby is a nap.
- Material: matte vinyl, matte laminate
- Size: 3 x 2.6 inches (7.6 x 6.6 cm)
- Cut: die cut to the shape of the design
- Quantity: 1 sticker
Holds up on laptops, phone cases and water bottles washed by hand. Ships flat with a backing card.
A sticker sheet
Autumn Mushrooms sticker sheet, 4 x 6 inches, 14 kiss cut stickers on glossy paper.
Toadstools, acorns and fallen leaves in warm browns, sized for journals and planner spreads.
- Material: glossy sticker paper, not waterproof
- Size: sheet 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm); stickers from 0.5 to 1.5 inches
- Quantity: 14 stickers on one sheet
Best for paper: journals, planners, envelopes and scrapbooks.
Planner stickers
Weekly Task kit for the Erin Condren Vertical LifePlanner, 3 sheets, 72 matte removable stickers.
The planner name is the first thing these buyers check, so it goes in the opening line. Add the box sizes in a list underneath, because a planner sticker that is 2 mm too wide is the one complaint that matters most here.
A holographic sticker
Moon Phases holographic sticker, 3.5 inches wide, printed on holographic vinyl with a clear gloss laminate.
The rainbow shine comes from the vinyl itself, so the whole sticker shifts colour in light, not only the design.
That second sentence answers the question holographic buyers ask most, and it is only honest if the base is holographic. If you use a glitter or holo laminate over white vinyl, say “holographic laminate” instead.
Writing sticker descriptions faster with a generator
Sticker shops tend to list in batches: a new collection of twelve designs, or one design in three sizes. The facts change a little from listing to listing while the structure stays the same, which is where a description generator helps, as long as you feed it the same facts the template asks for. Here is the whole job with ListingBrief AI as the example.
- Write the facts first. Material, size, cut, finish, quantity and where it holds up, one short list per design. A generator cannot know your laminate.
- Paste them into the free Shopify description generator for a single product description with a page title and meta description, no account needed. For Etsy, the ListingBrief AI dashboard returns a title, 13 tags and the description from the same notes, and the free Etsy tag generator writes a tag set on its own.
- Check every durability word in the draft against the claims table above. If the draft says “waterproof” and your sticker is paper, cut it. A draft is a starting point, never the final listing.
- Make the size line exact. Swap any rounded number for the measurement you took.
- Repeat for the next design, changing only the facts that changed.
When the manual way is enough
A generator saves time on volume. You may not need one if:
- you list one or two new designs a month and already have a description you like;
- every sticker in your shop is the same size, material and finish, so you only change the design sentence;
- you sell digital stickers only, where the description is mostly file type and pixel size.
In those cases, keep the template above in a note and fill it by hand.
Common sticker description mistakes
- Size only in a photo. Many buyers read on a phone and never zoom. Put it in the text, in both units.
- “Waterproof” on paper or unlaminated stickers. It is the claim most likely to come back as a review.
- No count on a sheet or pack. “Sticker sheet” says nothing about how many.
- Calling every shiny finish holographic. Glitter, holo laminate and holographic vinyl look different in person.
- Digital stickers without a clear “nothing ships” line. A buyer who expected a physical sticker opens a case.
For the wider rules that apply to every product, see how to write Etsy product descriptions, and if you sell sticker-adjacent products such as mugs, the mug product description guide covers dishwasher and microwave claims the same way.
When you are ready, paste one design’s notes into the free description generator and check the draft against the claims table. If it passes, the rest of the collection will go the same way.
