AI Product Description Generator: Write and Check Drafts

An AI product description generator turns a few notes about an item into a draft description you can edit and publish. A good one opens with what the product is, covers size, material, use and care, and keeps to the facts you gave it. A poor one pads the text with adjectives and invents details. The generator drafts. You check. Plan for both and you get the minutes back without the refunds.

This guide is for sellers on Etsy and Shopify. It covers what to feed a generator, how to judge what comes back, how the two marketplaces want the text shaped differently, and when writing by hand is still the better call.

What a product description generator is for

A description does a different job from the title. The title helps a shopper find the listing. The description is read after the click, while the shopper decides whether to buy. So a useful draft answers the questions in the order a buyer asks them:

  1. What is it, and what is it good for?
  2. How big is it, and what is it made of?
  3. How do I look after it?
  4. Who is it for, and when will it arrive?

A generator earns its place when it produces that structure every time from notes that take a minute to write. It stops earning it when you spend longer fixing the draft than you would have spent writing it.

Who gets the most from one

What to feed it

A generator can only describe what you tell it. Thin notes make a vague draft, and vague is what gets filled with filler. Write down:

Note Example Why it matters
What it is Leather card wallet The first sentence
Standout detail Full-grain, slim profile The reason to buy
Size 6 card slots, 10 x 7 cm The question buyers ask most
Materials Full-grain leather, waxed thread Trust and search
Care Wipe clean, condition yearly Saves a message later
Who it is for Everyday carry, gift for men The gift angle
Delivery Ships in a gift box Answers the gift question

Anything you leave out, the draft will skip or guess. A skipped fact costs you a buyer message. A guessed fact costs you a return.

How to check a draft, step by step

  1. Read the first two sentences alone. They show in search previews, so they should name the item and its best feature.
  2. Check every fact against the item. Size, material, colour, care, delivery time. Delete anything you did not supply.
  3. Look for filler. Phrases like “perfect for any occasion” say nothing. Cut them or replace them with a real detail.
  4. Add what only you know. How you make it, a quirk that is part of the charm, what a regular customer said.
  5. Read it as a buyer. If a question is still open, add one line for it.

The table below is the quick version of the same check.

Check Good draft Bad draft
Opening Names the item and its best feature “Introducing our stunning…”
Facts Only what you supplied Invented materials or sizes
Length As long as the questions need Padded to look thorough
Tone Sounds like your shop Sounds like every shop
Keywords The item’s name used naturally One phrase repeated five times

The most expensive mistake is an invented fact. A draft that says “sterling silver” when your notes said “silver tone” reads well and costs a refund. Treat every material and measurement as a claim to confirm.

Etsy and Shopify want different text

The same notes should not produce the same description on both. The marketplaces use the text differently.

Etsy Shopify
Where shoppers find you Etsy search, driven mostly by title, tags, category and attributes Google and your own store search
What the description does Convinces someone already looking at the listing Convinces the reader and feeds the page’s search snippet
Extra fields to fill 13 tags, attributes SEO page title, meta description, tags, collections
Tone Personal, shop-voiced Often cleaner, brand-voiced

On Shopify the description is only part of the job. The page also needs an SEO title and a meta description of roughly 155 characters so Google does not truncate it. A generator that writes only the body leaves two fields for you to fill. On Etsy, the 13 tags and the title matter more for being found, so draft them from the same notes as the description. Our guides to Etsy tags, Etsy titles and Shopify meta descriptions cover those fields in detail.

What to look for in a generator

Before you commit to one, run the same set of notes through it and compare:

Doing it faster: many descriptions at once

The approach changes when the count goes up:

ListingBrief AI is built for that workflow. You paste rough notes and it drafts the full listing for Etsy or Shopify, following each marketplace’s field limits. You can pick a tone from Default, Simple, Premium, Handmade or Playful. Every account gets 5 free generations a day with no credit card, and paid plans add bulk generation so a batch of notes becomes a batch of drafts. Results can be exported as CSV for Shopify import, and a free Chrome extension can fill the fields in the editor for you.

To try one field first, the free Shopify description generator writes a description plus an SEO title and meta description with no account. The Etsy title generator and Etsy tag generator do the same for those fields. For the Etsy side in full, see the Etsy description generator guide and bulk listing on Etsy.

When writing it yourself is enough

A generator is not always the better tool. Write the description by hand when:

In those cases the four buyer questions above still make a good outline. Our guide on how to write Etsy product descriptions goes through each part.

A checklist before you publish

If a description passes those checks, it does its job whether a generator or you wrote it. The generator’s value is the minutes it gives back, and those minutes are best spent on checking.
