Alura vs Marmalead: Which Etsy SEO Tool Should You Pay For?
September 21, 2026
Alura vs Marmalead is a choice between two opposite pricing philosophies before it is a choice between two feature sets. Alura sells four tiers, from a free plan up to $29.99 a month, and bundles research with the shop-running tools around it. Marmalead sells one plan (everything included, no tiers, no free tier) at $19 a month, or $300 once for life.
The short answer: pick Alura if you want to start at nothing and pay only for what you outgrow; pick Marmalead if keyword data is the whole reason you are buying, and you want the deepest version of it without reasoning about caps. On the invoice Alura is cheaper to begin with. On a five-year view, Marmalead’s lifetime licence is the cheapest line in this comparison, which is exactly why it is worth being honest about who should not take it.
Every plan, price, limit and quoted line below was read from each company’s own pricing page in September 2026. These change; open the page before you subscribe.

What Alura costs, and what the caps mean
Alura’s pricing page lists four plans and a monthly/annual toggle advertised as “Save up to 57 % on annual billing”. As of October 2026 the monthly figures are:
| Free | Basic | Growth | Professional | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price (monthly) | $0.00 | $7.99 | $14.99 | $29.99 |
| Daily keyword & product searches | 5 | 50 | “Higher usage limits” | Unlimited |
| Listings you can optimise | 10 | About 40 a month | More, with advanced data | Unlimited |
| AI credits | 1,000 starter | 2,000/month | 4,000/month | 8,000/month |
| Pinterest pins | No | No | 15/day | 40/day |
| Active A/B tests | No | No | 4 | 20 |
| Multiple shops | No | No | No | Yes |
| CSV export | No | No | Yes | Yes |
Two things about that table decide most of the comparison. First, Alura’s free plan is a real tier rather than a countdown: the FAQ says you can sign up “without submitting any credit card information”, and that the free plan “includes access to all tools, but with a limited number of searches so that you can try it before upgrading”. Second, what money buys at Alura is mostly allowance. The tools are largely the same across tiers; the numbers beside them grow. That is a friendly shape if your usage is uneven and an irritating one if you dislike watching a counter.
The shop-side tools are the real differentiator, and they sit outside research entirely: Pinterest pinning, Etsy Ads management, email marketing, customer follow-ups, A/B tests on images, titles and prices. If you currently pay for any of those separately, the comparison stops being about SEO tools.
What Marmalead costs, and why it has no free plan
Marmalead sells one plan four ways. As of September 2026 its pricing page lists:
| Billing | Headline rate | What you pay | Their framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $19/mo | $19 paid monthly | None |
| Quarterly | $18/mo | $53 paid quarterly | “Save $16 or 7%” |
| Annual | $16/mo | $190 paid annually | “Save $38 or 16%” |
| Lifetime | $5/mo | $300 paid ONCE | “Pay once, save $840 (73%) over 5 years” |
Pay once, save $840 (73%) over 5 years with our lifetime plan!
There is no free plan and no free trial. That is the single hardest fact in this comparison, and it is why so many people compare the two in the first place: Alura will let you work inside it this afternoon for nothing, and Marmalead will not let you see a single MarmaMeter without paying.
What you get for it is depth on one job. The feature list is built around keyword data Marmalead argues is measured rather than estimated: demand and engagement figures it calls “accurate” rather than estimated (“we know how many listing views came from a specific keyword”), keyword seasonality over a year, a three-month forecast, side-by-side comparison, and the MarmaMeters that present volume, engagement and competition as phone-signal bars. On the listing side you get letter grades broken into SEO Factors and Sales Factors, an AI description critique and AI-generated FAQs. Multiple shops are included rather than gated to a top tier.
Where the two genuinely overlap
Strip away the marketing modules and both tools answer the same three questions: which keywords do shoppers use, how competitive are they, and is my listing using them properly. Alura’s Keyword Research, Etsy Autocomplete enrichment and Listing Optimization line up against Marmalead’s Storm, MarmaMeters and letter grades.
The difference is not coverage, it is conviction. Marmalead is more opinionated: it grades, forecasts and tells you a keyword is bad. Alura is broader and flatter: it gives you data across more surfaces (listings, shops, trending keywords, ads, Pinterest) and leaves more of the judgement to you.
Pick Alura if…
- You want to start at zero. The free plan is not a teaser; it is every tool at 5 searches a day, with no card. Against a tool with no trial at all, that asymmetry is enormous.
- You are paying for more than one subscription. Research plus an email tool plus a pinning tool, collapsed into $14.99, is the clearest saving in this comparison.
- You want to A/B test. Testing images, titles and prices is not something Marmalead offers at any price.
- You are cost-sensitive month to month. $7.99 against $19 is a real gap on a shop that is not yet profitable.
- Your problem is the listing, not the keyword. Alura’s optimisation suite is pointed at improving the listing you already have.
Pick Marmalead if…
- Keyword data is the whole purchase. You are not buying pinning or ad management, and you would rather one tool did SEO deeply than five tools did everything shallowly.
- You want forecasting and seasonality. A three-month forward view on a keyword is Marmalead’s clearest feature advantage; Alura has nothing equivalent.
- You hate caps. Everything is on the one plan. There is no tier to outgrow, no daily counter, no AI-response allowance.
- You are thinking in years, not months. $300 once is less than two years of Alura’s Growth plan and less than sixteen months of Marmalead’s own monthly rate. If you are confident you will still be selling on Etsy in three years, it is the cheapest option on this page by a distance.
- You run several shops. Marmalead includes multiple shops; Alura puts them behind the $29.99 tier.
Who should stay with Marmalead? The established seller who already subscribes, already reads the MarmaMeters fluently and uses the letter grades as a working checklist. Switching to save a few dollars a month buys you a different interface for data you have already learned to read, and loses the forecast. That is a downgrade dressed as a saving.
How to switch, either direction
- Get your keywords out first. Whatever you are leaving, export or copy your saved keyword lists while the subscription is still live. Alura’s CSV export starts on the Growth tier, so plan around that if you are on Free or Basic.
- Do not buy the lifetime licence as your first purchase. It is the best value on this page and the only line here you cannot undo. Run a recurring month first.
- Use Alura’s free plan as the trial Marmalead does not offer. A fortnight at 5 searches a day tells you more about fit than any comparison table, this one included.
- Cancel at the end of the period. Alura runs your paid features to the end of the billing period and then drops you to the free tier, so cancelling early buys you nothing.
- Change one thing at a time. Swapping research tools and rewriting listings in the same week makes it impossible to say which move helped.
The job neither one finishes
Both tools stop at the same place, and it is the place most sellers actually lose the evening: after the research, you still have to write the listing. Marmalead will grade your description and suggest FAQs. Alura will spend some of your monthly AI credits on a draft. Neither is built around the writing step, and both hand you back a keyword list, a score, and an empty title field with 13 empty tag slots under it.
That is the job ListingBrief AI is built for. Give it the product and it returns a title inside Etsy’s character limit, all 13 tags inside the 20-character tag rule, and a description written for that listing rather than poured from a template, with the marketplace’s own published limits checked as it goes: title length, tag count and length, description structure, and notes on repeated words and price or shipping language in the title.
New accounts get 5 free generations a day with no card. Pro is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. You can also test the writing half with no signup at all, using the free Etsy title generator and Etsy tag generator.
A sensible combination for a lot of shops: run Alura’s free plan (or Marmalead, if you have paid for it) to decide the keywords, then let ListingBrief write the listing around them.
The verdict
Alura vs Marmalead comes down to whether you are buying a platform or an instrument. Alura is a platform: four tiers, a genuine free plan, research plus marketing plus optimisation, and caps you manage as you grow. Marmalead is an instrument: one plan, no caps, no free way in, and the deepest keyword data and forecasting on this page.
If you are not yet sure keyword research changes your results, start free with Alura; there is no version of Marmalead that lets you find out for nothing. If you already know it does, and you expect to be selling for years, Marmalead’s $300 lifetime licence is the least expensive decision here.
