Shopify Product Tags: What They Do and How to Use Them
October 4, 2026
A product tag in Shopify is a short label you attach to a product so you can group, find and filter it. Tags power three things: automated collections that pull in every product with a given tag, filtering and bulk actions on the Products page in your admin, and storefront search, where a customer’s search that matches a tag brings up the tagged product. What tags do not do is help your store rank on Google. Shopify says so plainly, and that one fact changes how you should write them.
This guide covers what tags are for, how to add and remove them one product at a time or in bulk, the limits Shopify sets, a naming system that stays usable as your catalogue grows, and how to fill tags quickly when you are listing many products at once.
Every Shopify rule quoted here comes from Shopify’s own help centre, as of October 2026. Shopify changes its admin regularly, so check the help page if a button has moved.
What a product tag in Shopify actually does
Shopify’s help centre lists the jobs a product tag does. You can filter products by tag on the Products page and the Inventory page, and:
You can also use product tags as selection criteria when you’re building a collection, or as filters when you’re creating a menu. When a customer searches for a term that matches a product tag, the tagged products display in search results, but the tags aren’t displayed to the customer.
That gives tags four practical uses.
| Use | Where it happens | Who benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Automated collections | Collection conditions such as “Product tag is equal to linen” | Customers browsing a category |
| Admin filtering | Products and Inventory pages, Search and filter, then Tag | You and your staff |
| Bulk changes | Select by tag, then apply one action to all of them | You, at the end of a season |
| Storefront search | Your shop’s own search box | Customers who type a word that is not in your title |
The storefront search use is the one most sellers miss. Shopify notes that tags with intentional misspellings that customers commonly use can help those customers find your products in storefront search. A tag is a quiet way to add the words people type without stuffing them into a title.
Do Shopify tags help SEO?
No. Shopify’s guidance on tag formats is direct:
Tags aren’t used by search engines, so don’t use tags to try to improve search results for your online store.
Google ranks your product page on the words the page shows: the product title, the description, the SEO title and meta description, image alt text and the URL. Tags sit behind the scenes. A tag like “gift for hikers” can help a shopper already on your site find the mug through your search box, and it does nothing for that mug on Google.
So put your keyword work where search engines read it. Shopify SEO for beginners walks through every field that counts, and Shopify meta description examples has patterns for the one most stores leave blank.
Some themes do show tags. Shopify’s tag format guide warns that “in some online store themes, your product tags are displayed to your customers, such as in drop-down filter menus.” If your theme does this, every tag is customer-facing copy, so a tag like “fw19-clr” becomes a puzzle in your filter menu.
How to add a tag to one product
- In your Shopify admin, open Products and click the product.
- Find the Tags section on the product details page.
- Type the tag, or pick an existing one from the list. A new tag is created automatically and offered on later products.
- Click Save.
To remove a tag, hover over it in the same section, click the x, and save. Removing a tag from one product leaves it on every other product that carries it.
How to add or remove tags in bulk
For one change applied to many products, use a bulk action rather than editing each product.
- Go to Products in your Shopify admin.
- Filter the list first, by vendor, type, collection or an existing tag, so it holds only the products you mean to change.
- Tick the products. To go past one page, tick the box at the top and choose to select all matching results.
- Open the actions menu and click Add tags or Remove tags.
- Choose the tags and click Save.
That covers “add the tag sale to these forty products”. When each product needs different tags, the bulk editor or a CSV file is the better route.
| The change | Best tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same tag on many products | Bulk action | One action, no typing per product |
| Different tags on a few dozen products | Bulk editor | Type each product’s tags in a table |
| Different tags on hundreds of products | CSV export and import | Edit the Tags column in a spreadsheet |
| Tags on brand new products | CSV import | Tags arrive with the product |
In a CSV, the Tags column holds every tag for that product, separated by commas, for example Fall-2023, casual, vintage in Shopify’s own sample. When you update existing products, start from an export of your store, so each Tags cell already holds that product’s current tags and you add to them rather than retyping them. Our Shopify bulk editor guide covers the table and the mistakes that wipe data, and the Shopify product CSV template explains every column.
The limits Shopify sets on product tags
Shopify’s help centre lists these rules for tags. Product tags follow the product row of the table.
| Rule | Product tags | Order and draft order tags |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length | 255 characters | 40 characters |
| Maximum per item | 250 tags | 250 tags |
| Case sensitive | No | No |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers and hyphens | Letters, numbers and hyphens |
A few details from the same pages are worth knowing:
- Tags are not case sensitive. “Approved” and “approved” are the same tag, so pick one style and keep it.
- Special characters are ignored or treated as the same. Shopify’s example: a collection condition of
red-newalso pulls in products taggedred_new,red+neworred&new. You also cannot savesale25%whilesale25exists. - Accented letters can exclude search results. Shopify advises sticking to plain letters, numbers and the hyphen.
- Shopify Plus shops can have unlimited product tags, though only 250 display when bulk editing tags.
- Tags belong to one section. A tag created on products is not copied to customers or orders.
A tag naming system that stays usable
Shopify’s own advice is to keep tags short, consistent and clear to customers. In practice that means deciding what kinds of tags you use before you have three hundred of them.
A system that works for most small shops uses a handful of tag families:
| Family | Example tags | What it drives |
|---|---|---|
| Material | linen, ceramic, sterling-silver | Collections and filters |
| Colour | sage-green, navy, natural | Filters, if your theme shows tags |
| Occasion or recipient | wedding-gift, gift-for-dad | Gift collections |
| Season or campaign | spring-2026, black-friday | Bulk actions, timed collections |
| Search words | coffee cup, tea mug, mug gift | Storefront search matches |
| Internal workflow | needs-photos, restock | Your admin filters only |
Some habits keep the list clean:
- One spelling per idea. “Grey”, “gray” and “gray-color” are three tags to Shopify. Choose one, and add the other spelling only as a deliberate search-word tag.
- Hyphens for multi-word tags you filter on. Shopify’s own examples use forms like
spring-clearanceandFall-2019. - Customer-readable words wherever a theme might show them. “Fall-2019” reads better in a filter menu than “myfall19”, which is Shopify’s own example.
- A prefix for internal tags if your theme displays tags, so staff-only labels are easy to spot and keep out of menus.
- A short list you review. Search the Products page by tag every few months and merge the near-duplicates.
If you have only a few products, you may not need a tag system at all. Shopify says as much, and a twelve-product shop is better served by good titles and two or three collections. Our guide to creating a collection on Shopify shows how tag conditions feed automated collections when you do need them.
Shopify tags and Etsy tags are different tools
Sellers who list on both marketplaces often copy their Etsy tags into Shopify. That works, as long as you know the two do different jobs.
| Etsy tags | Shopify product tags | |
|---|---|---|
| How many | Up to 13 | Up to 250 |
| Length | Up to 20 characters | Up to 255 characters |
| Read by | Etsy’s own search | Collections, filters and your store’s search box |
Etsy’s 13 tags are search phrases a buyer types into Etsy. In Shopify, those same phrases make good search-word tags: they help your storefront search match the words customers use. They will not build your collections for you, so add your material, colour and occasion tags alongside them. Our complete guide to Etsy tags covers how to choose the 13 on the Etsy side.
How to fill tags faster when you list many products
The manual way is fine for a small catalogue. Open each product, think about what a customer would type, and add the family tags your collections rely on. The slow part is the search-word tags, because they need you to think like a buyer for every product.
ListingBrief AI drafts that part from your rough product notes. Along with the title, description, SEO title and meta description, it writes a set of short search-phrase tags for each product. You can use them in Shopify in three ways:
- One product in place. The free Chrome extension adds a panel to the Shopify admin product editor and fills the generated fields, tags included, into the product you have open.
- A batch as a CSV. Paste products one per line in bulk mode, then download the batch as a CSV with Shopify’s product columns. The tags land in the Tags column, and every product is set to draft so nothing goes live before you review it.
- Copy and paste. Copy the tags from any result into the Tags section, or into the Tags column of a CSV you exported from your own store.
It does not create your material, colour or campaign tags, since those depend on how you have set up your collections. Add those yourself, and read each draft before it goes live. You can try tag drafting on its own with the free Etsy tag generator, with no signup, and an account gets 5 free generations a day.
When the manual way is enough
- You sell a small catalogue. A dozen products need a few collection tags, typed once.
- Your tags are all structural. Material, colour and season tags come from your own records, and no writing tool knows them better than you do.
- You only need one change across many products. A bulk action does it in a minute.
- You rely on storefront filters rather than tags. Shopify itself suggests storefront filters for a better filtering experience on collection pages, so you may need fewer tags than you think.
A quick checklist for product tags
- Decide your tag families before you add more tags.
- Use letters, numbers and hyphens only, in one consistent style.
- Keep internal tags recognisable, and out of customer-facing menus.
- Put your SEO keywords in titles, descriptions and SEO fields, not tags.
- Use a bulk action for one change, the bulk editor or a CSV for many.
- Back up a CSV of your products before any large tag change.
